Explanations
'No, No, why am I smiling! No I can't!" Lily had been thinking not just today but a couple of days before what happened with James. She just couldn’t possibly think about her and James being together. All those years she thought she hated him. It just wasn't logical that she could like him.

"I swear!" James blurted.
"Now why would Evans snog you?" Sirius asked.
"It wasn't a snog! It was an accident really. She stormed off after detention and I grabbed her arm and she turned in too close." James explained.
"Ah! So it wasn't real. It didn't mean anything." Sirius said calmly.
"No, I think she liked it. I'm serious! You could feel it." James said as Sirius gave him a questionable look.

Both James and Lily went down stairs, ironically at the same time. She took the last step and spotted James and immediately turned around but James was too quick. Lily wasn't ready to talk just yet but she had no choice now.
"Potter, you know it didn't mean anything."
"I know." He said. Was he wrong about Lily? Did it not mean anything? Surely she had to be lying. He frowned maybe it didn't mean anything and it was just having the pleasure of believe in what was not there.
"Potter, you know I don't like you like that. It was an accident. I'm really sorry if I got your hopes up." She was really sorry. Why didn't she just tell him it did mean something? She felt bad now and gave him a sympathetic smile and went down for dinner.
"But I thought….I really thought." James said to Sirius walking down the Great Hall for breakfast the next morning.
"Prongs you can't go beating yourself up about it. She's turned you down a million times this ones no different."
James didn't eat at all that day he was too depressed.
"Mate you've got to eat!" Moony said at dinner.
"I'm not hungry." James mumbled.
He didn't even want to go patrolling. The next morning however changed James whole life.
"So the mudblood is on her own today, I see." Snape teased Lily. They were right out side the Great Hall entrance. James had just opened the Common Room door and was on his way out with the rest of the Marauders.
"Leave me alone Severus." Lily snapped.
The Marauders were now two stair cases away.
"You know what! I've had enough! Slytherins are self-fish, judging, horrible people. I have no doubt that you'll join that Voldemort person right away after we graduate! No one ever liked you and I can see why!" Lily and insulted him a little too much. James was now at the bottom of the last staircase.
"I've been waiting to try this new one out on someone. This is the perfect chance." Snape replied with quite an amount of anger. James saw the Snape was at least ten feet away from Lily. He ran over just as Snape was saying one of his unheard incantations. Before he knew it everything was in slow motion, not because of the spell but that’s just how it seemed in James's mind. A purple flame came shooting out of Snape's wand. James dove in front of Lily and the flame hit him square in the chest. He smashed into the ground front up and slid at least fifteen feet down the hallway.
"What did you do?" Lily screamed at Snape. All he did was smile.
'Potter deserves it, all those things he's done to me.' Snape thought. Before actually had a change to respond Lily hexed she didn't have to do anything worse to him. She ran to James's side.
"Oh, James!" she whispered, "James, why did you do that?"
"We all have to……make…sacrifices…for the ones…….we love." James said so weakly that Lily almost burst out crying. Thank goodness for her only a tear rolled down her cheek. She took her right hand and cupped it around his face.
"Besides………who knows…..what….that….spell could have done." James whispered again.
'My social reputation or the person I love? Definitely……' Lily thought to her self and gave James another sympathetic smile since almost everyone in the school was crowed around him and Lily now. Of course Snape was in the back round snickering with an evil smile.
She bent down and kissed him and all the noise from the crowd disappeared. She didn't care who was watching she was kissing the boy she loved! She left her spinning world and let go. Remus and Sirius obviously knew what to do and came over to help Lily lift James to take him to the Hospital Wing. They didn't know where Peter was but why did it matter. James had to get treated neither of them knew what the spell did to him. James was now unconscious and his friends laid him on a bed. Lily rushed to find Madame Pomfrey and explain to her what happened. She started to work right away with potions and antidotes. By afternoon she finally had a cure but James had to take at least twelve potions every hour. When he woke up the Marauders, excluding Peter since he was still not there, and Lily sighed with relief.

Jumping
James, his friends, and now girlfriend talked until Madame Pomfrey shooed them out. Now he was alone.
********
"James? James, dear?" He heard a woman's voice.
"Prongs!" Sirius yelled.
"Youngman, that was unnecessary!" Madame Pomfrey scolded.
James eyes opened slowly.
"What?" he said sleepily.
"Hey mate!" Sirius said excitedly. James jumped, well you would too if your best friend was smiling at you and was inches away from you face.
"Bloody hell, Sirius!" James said.
"Mr. Black, one more time, one more time and you'll be escorted from the Hospital Wing." Madame Pomfrey said.
"Sorry." He said smiling. Now, she was leaving to go make a potion or two.
"Where's Evans, my new girlfriend." James said with a proud smile.
"Back in Common Room, and she's not your girlfriend mate. I think Snape hit you a little too hard." Remus said.
"She said she was too upset at the fact that the one person in the whole school to stop Snape had to be you." Peter piped up.
"Wormtail, you’re here!" James said surprised.
"He's always been here, mate" Sirius said confused.
"He wasn't here the last time I woke up." James said more confused.
"Mate, the last time you woke was three days ago in our dorm. You must've been dreaming." Remus said.
"But didn't you see me snog Evans after Snape did whatever he did to me?" James asked.
"Prongs, Snape did that spell, your noble instincts got the best you, it hit you, you flew fifteen feet, and you were out cold. There was no snogging." Sirius explained.
"You had to be dreaming. I mean you were thrashing around a lot it seemed like you having a fit or something. Madame Pomfrey had to do some kind of spell to stop you from moving." Remus said feeling kind of sorry for his friend.
James laid back down on his pillow and sighed.
"Although, Evans did come and visit you." Sirius lied but seeing James believed him he kept going on it. James lightened up. Madame Pomfrey came in with five different potions.
"I have to take all of those!" James said widening his eyes.
"Yes dear, with the hit you took you'll need them. Just look what he did to you!" she said pointing to his chest. James looked down and jumped again. His chest was all bandaged.
"You don't even want to see the bruise. It'll make you scream it's so horrible.You were lucky not to break any ribs. Never in my whole life have seen a spell like that!" she said.
James drank all the potions and made a different face for each one. He had to stay in the Hospital Wing for at least three more days, which in James's mind didn't make anything better. He needed to talk to his dream girlfriend and find out why she's made at him for saving her life. Again, in James's mind made no sense at all. Most girls would be happy that he did that. They would be at his feet begging to do something in return but no, not Lily. She was different, very different in fact.

Cheats
"Lily, how could possibly be mad at him? He practically saved your life!" Alice said. The girls were getting ready for bed and they just had to ask Lily why she was mad at James.
"I know but it seems like every time I get in a fight he comes to fight my battles for me! You know how I am! I like to do things on my own. He just makes me so mad!" Lily said calmly.
"You like him now though right?" Alice asked.
"I've always liked him you know…." Lily said.
"No as in like like him?" Jen cut in.
Lily blushed and nodded.
"Oh my gosh I knew it!" Jen screamed.
"You guys aren't mad at me are you?" Lily asked embarrassed.
"No way! I mean he's hot, smart, hilarious, plus he's saved your life…..5 times and saved your life like twice. How could you not like him?!" Alice said.
Jen was now skipping around the room she was so excited. Lily took out some cady she was given to anonymously for her birthday. Jen finally got tired of skipping and they all dozed off. The next day, rumors spread that James was being released that night. The Gryffindors decided to throw a party for him. Lily started getting nervous. He would be coming back any minute now.

James was walking back from the Hospital Wing when he bumped into someone, Betsy McGregger.
"Oh, hi James!" she said.
"Hi, Betsy." He said dreamily. Betsy was one of the prettiest most popluar girls in school.
"Are you feeling better?" she asked.
"Yeah much!" he replied.
"Well you know that party they're holding for in Common Room? I was wondering if you wanted to go with me. Like as a date?"
"Yeah definitely!" he said. He just couldn't refuse an offer by the prettiest girl in school.
The next thing he knew they were holding hands. The opened the portrait door and everyone cheered.

Lily looked at the stairs. She heard cheering. James must be back. She ran down and dodged the people to make it to the center. She was the happiest girl on earth until she saw them. James and Betsy McGregger were standing there hold hands! James looked over and saw Lily. She had the saddest most confused look on her face. He would so rather be yelled at than given that look. But why did he care its not like Lily like him. He was with Betsy now well since they were officially going out.
After party, talking, and drinking, Betsy and James were found on the couch snogging. Was James actually in love with Betsy? It was like all his feelings for Lily had disappeared. She was perfect for him.
Lily on the other had run up to her room with Jen and Alice there to comfort her all she could do was cry. He said he loved her! Not some Betsy! The next morning, well really afternoon Lily woke up she had missed breakfast. She had woken up earlier but she didn't want to risk seeing Potter.
'How did I even like him!' she thought, 'God he's so confusing! I'm so over him!'
She didn't care now, she was hungry and she was so not missing lunch. She made to the Great Hall with no sign of Potter. Just then they were locked in a kiss. She tried telling herself that she was over him. Then she felt a tap on her shoulder. She swung around and found herself facing a tall boy with long brown hair and brown eyes.
"Um….Hi." he said.
"Do I know you?" Lily said politely.
"I'm Dustin Durrey. I was wondering if you wanted to have lunch with me." He said smiling.
"I'd love to!" she said.
Lily learned that Dustin was a Chaser for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.
"Is Lily sitting with the Dustin Durrey?" Jen asked.
"No!" Alice said surprised.
"Look!" Jen pointed at the couple.
They half walked half jogged over to them. Lily introduced them to Dustin. They stayed for a few minutes then headed back to Common Room. Then Lily and Dustin got up and walked to where the hallways split.
"Lily?" he asked
"Hm?"
"Do you want to come to the next Hogsmead weekend with me?" he asked sweetly.
Lily smiled, "It's a date!" she said kissing him on the cheek and walked away.

"Hey Prongs, you know Evans is going out with Durrey?" Sirius said coming down the Quidditch pitch to meet Prongs after practice. He always came to watch James practiced just because he had nothing better to do.
"He's a cheat!" he said. He didn’t love her anymore but he felt he had to fulfill a brotherly position for her.
"I thought you were going out with Betsy?" Sirius asked. Why was James caring so much about Evans?
"I am! I love Betsy but Lily is still my friend." he explained. They walked up to the castle then to Common Room. James walked over to Lily.
"Lily we need to talk." He said seriously.
"After you change your clothes!" she said considering James was still in his Quidditch robes.
"Well I will after we talk come on." He said.
Lily got up and they walked out into the corridor.
"Lily, Dustin is a bad person."
"Who are you to go and tell me who I should go out with?"
"No you don't understand. He's a cheat. He goes out with someone then cheats. That's his reputation. He's a bad person, Lily. You don't want to go out with him" he said trying to be convincing.
"What happened to dear Betsy?" she said harshly.
"I still love Betsy! I'm trying to save you from getting hurt!" he said his voice rising.
"I can live without you trying to save me from everything Potter! I can take care of myself!" she yelled at him.
"Fine! If you don't want me to help don't come running to me when you find out he's cheating on you!" he yelled at her and walked back into Common Room.
Lily went to her dorm and explained to her friends about James and Dustin. Same with James, he went up to his dorm and explained everything to his friends. The week had gone by fast, James and Betsy had their daily snog fest in the Great Hall. Lily and James had forgotten everything about Sunday night. It was now Friday night Lily was all prepared for Hogsmead the next day. James and Lily had to patrol the hallways tonight. They walked out of Common Room. They didn't talk at all for a while.
"Look I'm sorry." James said suddenly.
"No, I appreciate you trying to act all big brotherly and all but I can take care of myself. I just like doing things on my own." She said.
"I know. I just feel like as a friend I have to look over you, you know?" he explained.
"I know. And I never did thank you for saving me from Severus's spell." She said.
" No problem. I figured one of these days Snape would crack." James said. Then he heard a noise. He turned his head sharply.
"Did you hear that?" he asked quickly.
Lily nodded. Wands out, they walked over to the broom closet and opened the door. Wide eyed to what they found. Dustin and Betsy practically eating each others faces.
"Dustin?" Lily said hurt.
"Lily wait I can explain." He said running after her.
James had no words. He gave the exact face Lily had given James the night Betsy and he got together and just walked away. She got up and walked after him.
"James let me explain." She said softly.
"Don’t even bother! We're through!" he yelled and stormed off back to Common Room.

"And there she was snogging Durrey like there was no tomorrow!"
"It'll be alright mate. I mean Betsy is one of those people who can't get enough. You were too good for her mate." Sirius said.
This obviously cheered him up.
********
"And there he was snogging McGregger like she was the best thing in the world!" Lily said a few tears falling down her cheeks, "I mean I don't even know why I'm so upset. I only knew him a few days!"
"It's because you liked him. It'll be alright! Dustin is one of those low life jerks who only care about themselves. You so deserve better."
This seemed to cheer Lily up.
