Gandalf hasnt displayed any type of offensive magic that i can think of that compares to what Voldemort is capable of. We know Voldemor is capable of casting the same type of spells that Gandalf can but theres nothing to suggest that Gandalf has the same ability. Although, he does have that one really cool spell that turns his staff into a really bright flash light.

Why not? All Gandalf needed was a sword. Voldemort has casually materialized more exotic armaments out of thin air (Wormtail's metal hand).

He could probably transfigure some rocks into a rock monster, then make the Balrog fight it for his amusement. That's what I'd do. Summon some popcorn too.

To call the sword Gandalf had just a sword tells me you don't know about it. It was not your average sword. It was a first age elven sword.
