IMO you shouldn't adjust for inflation, cause when gone with the wind came out in 1939 tickets were 23cents. and i think it is all relative of the times of the movie prices, cause people in 1939 wouldn't pay 10 dollars to see a movie in 1939. a better comparison would be to look at the number of tickets sold.

I do know that Titanic made only $112.5 million domestically in 3 weeks when adjusted for inflation (afi). Not sure about the international box office when (afi) although it'd obviously be at a higher number than it's domestic number, then you'd combine the 2 amounts and there's your answer.
Titanic's at $908 billion with Gone with the Wind at number 1 with $1.4 trillion when (afi).
big numbers.
but that be interesting to know, though: Titanic's number when (afi) during the 3rd week after it's release..

Peter Jackson and George Lucas were the closest ones to do it with lotr and sw but what Cameron's done, damn. back to back billion dollar grossing movies..
lol, that's sick..

Yeah, Cameron deserves it, he's one of the best. Avatar, although technically amazing, really lacks in the story department. It was painfully cheesy and cliched at times, and the lack of originality was painfully present. Even so, given the amazing eye candy, and the terrific 3D presentation, its shortcomings are easily forgiven. It was my first 3D movie, and I couldn't stop smiling at just how much fun, and how cool it is. I haven't felt like that at the movies in a long time. Now lets just hope that Avatar is a stepping stone to what should be a terrific movie, both story wise and graphic wise, Battle Angel.
P.S. Did anyone find it strange that the clothes people wear 150 years from now are exactly what you'd expect to see people wearing in 2010. I cant believe Cameron didn't put any effort in that.

The Dark Knight is already better critically regarded and contains way more memorable material.
Also, I think it's cheap to give Cameron full credit for Titanic. Leonardo DiCaprio was at the peak of his teen fame, so that helped and it was an obvious cast choice for a big love story.
The story wasn't even his, really. It was the story of Titanic. So he essentially made all that money telling an existing tale.
We may not see another movie beat those, financially, in our lives; but some of us feel we saw way better movies than Avatar in the year it came out. Much less Titanic.
why do you guys think that out of curiosity? bot of these movies happened within 10 years of each other... its perfectly reasonable to assume that it can be done again even with a different director in the next 60-70 years or so i plan on being alive.
um, you copied and pasted my post onto yours cause that's exactly what i wrote. either that or you're pointing out the bad grammar. if so, my bad, i'm sure you got what i meant but incase you didn't, i meant to write:
"I don't think we'll ever see a director again in our lifetime that will direct 2 movies back to back that have made more than a billion dollars."

like i said the 2 (or now 3) who came the closest to doing what cameron's done (back to back billion dollar grossing films) are peter j, george l. and harry potter's henry yates. Now if they weren't able to do that feat at all in what 30 years then i don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. also there's no director on the horizon that i know that would have that type of power or effect that i know of that would make such a feat happen if steven spielberg, george lucas, peter j, james c, and henry yates haven't done it.

So, both the ones coming close did it in the last 10 years and the one that did it also only did it in the last 12 years....well...seems like they are picking up speed. Might very well happen again sometime soon.
i mistakenly mentioned cameron in that last group, when i wrote that he was one of the one's whom haven't achieved the feat, but to get back to what you're saying, even if one of the aformentioned directors does do it eventually you'll still have cameron reigning supreme. notice how the 3 closest have come close with popular and established franchises only. cameron'd still have the record for doing it with 2 completely seperate films.
who do you see doing that anytime soon especially when it hasen't been done already (for decades) by the top grossing franchises.

Im pretty confident that we will see movies making more money then those movies in our lifetime, just imagine in 30 years or so, the technology will be so much better and progress only seems to happen faster and faster so movies with groundbreaking tech will deffinantly happend sooner rather then later and I think it's reasonable to think it will happend at one point.
