Beat it today. Good and bad. Again, it's yearning to be great but extremely flawed, as before. But it didn't stop me from having fun. The 2 false climaxes are good times, but the "here's 30 attackers to kill" sequences only highlighted the poor fighting (and the fact that stealth is completely unnecessary, though I used it when possible). The assassinations are all similar, but you don't notice until about #5, and with only 9 you don't have long to ponder it.

The meta-story was actually clever I thought. A cliffhanger, yeah, but it was a fun way to justify the game, and reading the emails was surprisingly cool.

...

I'd buy a sequel if the shored up a few of the glaring flaws. Seriously, a PoP-style fighting scheme and making him less of a tank, more of an assassing would've done wonders.

Yeah, I call it a tech demo.

A great looking, sounding and expansive world, but no gameplay to back it up.

Okay, people. I have a confession to make.

I have never played any of the Assassin's Creed games.

Today I began a game of Assassin's Creed on my PS3, and I have to say that I am bored to tears with this game, so far.

Does it ever get good? I'm only at the point where Altaïr gets on a horse for the first time when he has to seek out the nine targets designated by Al Mualim.

I understand that this is much more a stealth game than an all out action game, but, so far, I am extremely bored with it.

The game looks like it would be a lot of fun, if only it weren't so damn SLOW!

You might want to skip the first AC but you should think about giving AC II a try. It's more exciting and refined than the original AC and the story and characters are much more fleshed out. Just all around a much better game. It's is still not an incredibly exciting game relative to a lot of the 3rd / 1st person shooters on the market but it can still be a lot of fun. It's not everyone's cup of tea though, my brother absolutely hates it, and even though I liked the second one, I still felt the most fun part about the last two games was building the Villa / Rome... which might tell you all you need to know about the excitement / pace of the game. If you don't like the first one I wouldn't recommending buying AC II but at least think about renting it or something.

AC2 explains most of the relevant information revealed in the first, and is much fast, more engaging, and more refined. It won't hurt to skip to AC2.

Also chiming in to say that you won't miss anything by skipping AC1. Buy the second, it's cheap as hell now and you won't be disappointed.

Hah. I'd say it's far more exciting than any cookie-cutter shooter.

It might be more fun, but I don't think it's more exciting. In those "cookie-cutter" shooters there an explosion / kill every five seconds, because they are made to appeal to the lowest common denominator with a barely existing attention span. They are like a Michael Bay movie, bombarding the sense every instant. I wouldn't say AC is more exciting, because I don't think it is, but I would say it is more riveting, and I don't think that is semantics.

It doesn't have the raw adrenaline factor, but its still a great game and very exciting at points.

Just to make things clear, Impediment, since they are being muddied, AC2 is clearly not going to give you the same... form of entertainment as a shooter. It's something much more engrossing and deep, and you might indeed find it thrilling and exciting. As someone who does not like FPS games, I know I certainly find AC's chases and kills a lot more exciting than "lowest common denominator" entertainment.

But I know you're smart, so I think you'll get the same kick out of it, Imp.

Don't get me wrong, GK; I LOVE games like this. I'm all for deep and engrossing story lines. The search and stealth factor reminds a lot of Metal Gear Solid 4 and it's predecessors. I'm also enjoying trying to find as many secret flags as I can.

The exploration, so far, has been very frustrating, though. I'm on horseback and the map is really pissing me off. Here I am trying to get to Damascus, and I can't even find the goddamn place!

Don't worry. After you get there once you can fast travel there I believe.

As for getting there the first time....

Yeah, the very beginning of the game sucks quite a bit, but once you've gotten to the city the first time you don't have to deal with the horseback stuff anymore.

I didn't find the beginning frustrating at all. I love exploration and i ended up getting to Damascus eventually just by exploring tons of stuff.

The first Assassin's game was meh, imo. Assassin's 2 saved the series for me.

[Before reading my post, do NOT highlight the spoilers I've included, at all, until you've played through about halfway into Assassin's Creed 2. I would hate it if someone spoiled some of those things before I experienced them myself.]

Matt, Peach is spot-on with her advice. You really can skip the first game. The second game does a good job of explaining the [SPOILER - highlight to read]: "DNA" Matrix-style experience you have in Altair's past. making it as though you didn't even need to play the first one.

The second one does better in just about every category: better story, better action, better climbing, less glitchy in combat, more fighting options, more weapons, funner upgrade system, a "Sim City" upgrade side option that I found quite fun to do, and some nice humor.

For instance, when you first meet [SPOILER - highlight to read]: your uncle, Mario, he says, "Itsa me!!! Mario!" which made me lol pretty hard. I'm glad no one here on KMC ruined that joke for me because it made it much more fun. I also did not enjoy the "clunky" and slowness of AC 1 so I took Peach's advise (which she gave a long time ago) and just stopped and picked up 2. I have not played 3, yet. I plan to do so after beating Fable III. smile

Major Spoiler, do not highlight until you've beaten AC:2 [SPOILER - highlight to read]: You should also love the crap out of the back-back story of AC:2 because of your distaste of religion. The story of Adam and Eve is explained and it's quite clear that they were not "divine" beings made by God and their "legend" got taken way out of context and morphed as most ancient stories do. It talks about the origins of man and I must say...AC:2 had such an awesome lore to it that I was truly entertained by a video game's story for the first time in many years. It was that good.

Ditto.

That gif is also intended to be racist. Doesn't offend me but it may offend others.

There's not an ounce of intended racism with my use of that gif. And since I've used it many, many times on KMC, and you've been the only one to cry about the racist nature of it (yet claim not to be offended), my guess is that it doesn't offend anybody else either. smile
