"Heph, I think it would be the best to give the key to the Hunter. He is likely to know much more than we, so he could actually make a choice he is absolutely sure about. I also think that what is behind is of great importance to him, and we kind of stepped into this mess without good reason. He also doesn`t seem to be our enemy and I am almost sure he will open it"

You want to take responsibility without placing it on another? It seems like a mature choice.
Okay, my final answer- Melkor would give the key to the Hunter, since he thinks that he is more "qualified" to make such an important choice, but he is okay with Heph opening it, since he actually rather wants it open. After all, Heph has the key.
