Yes, him struggling with his darker side was the plot line along with struggling with his friends and loved ones. This story wasn't at all told in the previous film, the last one was about him trying to be spider-man and Peter Parker and trying to balance it all out. Which he for the most part has by now. The symbiote as you said didn't have much of an origin, but Sandman DID have a story, how did you miss that? He killed uncle Ben in a small time robbery while attempting to get money to save his daughter. He was arrested, then escaped and became sandman. As for humor, the street scene was more or less trying to show he was care free now and didn't even care that he'd just broken up with the love of his life. He was turning evil but they wanted to lighten the mood and add some comedy into the movie. The thing in the Cafe showed him taking a kind of vengeance on MJ for dumping him.
and now I'm done discussing the subject so please everyone don't reply to this I dont feel like debating anymore

Spiderman 2 is my favorite, great structure underlying and outer story. great flow.
This sucked & like anomaly more or less said. Given the plots they were using they couldnt of made the movie any better and use those plots at the same time.
It was esentialy just to much.If any one of the plots had been just removed, then the movie would be better. What the hell was the point of putting three ****in villian stories in it anyway. because of all the different plots a long ass(and let me say very ****in boring) setup was required.
The movie didn't kick off until the symbiote took over, and that was to damn short. I think had the sandman plot been taking away some of the love story cut back, more could have been concenttrated on the symbiote story and venom story.
I could go on and on about the flaws of the structure but frankly i dont want to, it just sucked
Seemed way to rushed and too many storylines crammed into one movie. The producers just forced in Venom and Gwen for the fans, which ruined it because we got no character development at all.
And don't mess with Uncle Bens death. Just dont. It makes the whole scene in the first movie pointless.
This movie could have been stretched into at least 2 more movies. Now they used up 2 good villians up in one movie. Good job. Give us a crappy portrayal of Venom(although he was pretty sweet for the 2 minutes he got) and then just blow him up with no hope that he servived. Venom teaming up with Sandman was also lame. I never thought of Venom as the type up team with anyone accept maybe Carnage.
And dont even get me started on the nerdy emo Peter and his dancing.
Overall this movie had alot of potential and the fight scenes were pretty sweet mainly the first but the many story lines left it seeming empty of any heart. Harry was suprisingly the best part of the film IMO.
My biggest gripe? There was WAAAAAYYYYYY TTOOOO F*CKIIIIINNG MUUUCCHH screen time dedicated to the annoying mug of Tobey Maguire. He was taking off the mask all the time! If I go see SPIDER-MAN, I want to see SPIDER-MAN, not Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man suit without the mask or Tobey Maguire without the suit at all. Seriously, 90% of the film had no Spidey on it, just the freaking actor. GOD that annoyed me.
Then there is the whole Harry thing. Again, if I go see Spider-Man, I want him to do all the heroic stuff, not see Goblin save his ass at every turn. That freaking sucked.
I hated the "cocky Tobey Maguire" in the film when he had the black suit UNDER HIM, he was rarely wearing it...he was just annoying.
Oh yeah, you don't mess with the Uncle Ben's death, f*ckers. Thank's for taking out the BIGGEST thing in the Spider-Man mythos, jackasses. Sandman as the murderer of Uncle Ben? RETARDED.
Most of the humor was "bleh".
Too much time spent on the love scenes and too little time spent on Spider-Man.
...now on the good things.
Venom was nicely done. The way Spider-Man took him out was freaking excellent scene. It was easily one of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in movies. The symbiote acted accordingly like in comics.
All the fight scenes were good too.
The way Spider-Man saved Gwen Stacy? A+, that was awesome.
Err, oh yeah, I thought that the actress playing Gwen Stacy was hot. More screen time for her instead of whiny and annoying Kirsten Dunst who has only one thing in common with MJ in the comics...the color of their hair...
J. Jonah Jameson rocked. J.K Simmons is an excellent actor.
Spider-Man's dance was awesome.
...all in all, I would give this movie 7/10 at best. Plot would get a big 5. Fight scenes would get a 9. Easily the worst Spidey film ever.
dont blame the director for the movie flaw he did what a director must do ,with the exception of guiding actor, raimi is not that good with it.BUT whoever write the script ,and okay,it was the director too........but have someone write a proper script next time.
I saw the film and I liked it. Between the 3 movies I place it at 3rd place. I love Gwen Stacy in the movie, she was gorgeous but like I said before, she had no place in the movie. Its amazing hoe ppl ***** that they want to see their favorite comic book character in a movie and the movie is actually made, all they can do is bash it and ***** about how unrealistic it is. Ive been reading Spidey comics for a long time now but when the movies come out I approach them as an alternate universe version because they aint gonna be exactly like the comic books and things will be changed. I think this movie was money well spent, it was very entertaining, the specia effects were awesome and just seeing Venom on screen was great!

I just saw it. The fights were amazing and the scenes with J. K. Simmons were hilarious. Bryce Dallas Howard did her part well and I was disappointed that she didn't have a bigger role, James Franco also did a good job himself.
However black suited Spidey was ridiculous, he wasn't aggressive or violent (well not enough any way), instead he was almost cool. Looks like the symbiote's bad influence it making nerds dancing, dating machines. Tobey is ridiculous in the scene were MJ breaks up with Pete and makes me want to hurt my self. Dunst sings worse than I do under the shower.
I think the movie would have been much better if:
1) Tobey and Dunst didn't deliver they're lines in the cheesiest way possible.
2) The movie should have been much darker, the theme is about revenge after all.
The way the movie was I would have preferred if Spider-Man kept the black suit and dumped MJ for Gwen.
Bryce Dallas Howard >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kirsten Dunst.
The movie wasn't that bad, I liked it a bit, but it could have been a lot better.
For starters the black suit obviously should have effected peter in a differnt way when confronting sandman at least (see ultmate spider-man venom arc as peter confronts his uncles killer)
I wish there had been moreeeee venom Seriously!!! and they should have used the double barrelll voice from the 90's cartoon/game.
Venom wasn't nearli "big and beastly" enough and i think that eddie had too much control over the suit. I wanted to see SPIDER-MAN versus VENOM not eddie brock vs. "green surfer" and Psycho Sand Goo man IMO the good definatly outways the bad but my critisiums are mostly venom based so...meh
(EDIT) that news screen where Venom Kills those police officers should have been shown in full (Leaving space for Venom Dialouge e.g "lets play a game...its a fun game....walk out of here wit all your limbs you win....*kills police officer*....he lost whos next")
And venom should have said WE instead of I...but thats just me being picky

Saw it on the 4th of May.
I give it a 7, maybe between 6 and 7.
The whole plot is good to make it a best seller as DVD and grant it success in the cinema release, but for even the less decent Spidey fan, the movie has major lacking of character development, excessive dialogues, and some classical elements messed up, badly.
Characters:
Harry Hosborn
In the comic book, as Green Goblin II, Harry gaved to Pete more than a run for his money in their battles, tough he lacked battle experience he was still a worth enemy, and matched Spidey's strength, reflexes and durability. At one point he was even stronger, but the serum caused hit death. In the movie, Harry's outfit is a flying skateboard with missiles, flamethrowers, and other weapons stored in.Harry wears some armor pieces and a suit, and just not fight in a way he can truly be a match for Pete.Even with surprise element, their first rumble shows Peter holding back and when he cut loose Harry goes K.O. and under amnesia effects. He changes from vengeanceful to hero in the end and dies to save Peter, but he hasn't been much of a "Goblin", he wasn't worth of being a second Goblin and onestly, not much of a nemesis.
Eddie Brock
First off, wrong actor.Eddie Brock was tall and with a bodybuilder look, he gets bigger thanks to the simbiote.Eddie Brock was more maniacal and more badass as a Venom. In the movie he loves Gwen Stacy, "mastermind" a plan that includes being poorly defeated, while Spidey's first battles with Venom were TO DEATH.
Venom gets a 4-5/10
Sandman
Flint Marko is messed up with moral implications, guilt feelings and all that shit to put some sweetness in a movie that was supposed to show us some real badass enemies, like Goblin in the first one.His show as a
giant sand monster was just an overuse of CGI.The fight in the sewers was ok, but Sandman went down just too fast and too easy to me.Ok, Pete is enhanced by the costume, but Sandman in comics got Class 85 of strength and can be rock hard. And since when he can fly?
I give him a 6/10
Spider-Man
Peter becomes darker? He just smack down security in a jazz club, crush Brock on a wall, and throw a bomb to Harry, nothing so dark to me.He dance around on the streets like a jerk, and dates Gwen Stacy for the fun of doing it, while in the comics, she was his GREAT FIRST LOVE.
In his battles with Harry, Venom and Sandman except for the first meeting with Marko and the second one in the sewers, I didn't saw much of incredible action for a superhero movie.
I give him a 6-7/10
Very Wrong Things:
-Sandman's origin, was like put in the script for case, molecular experiments lab and he falls in the test site, usually labs like thet got surveillance and are not that accessible for a criminal on the run.
-Venom's origin, too short, and not so good looking.
-Harry's portrayal of the Goblin heritage, and his "Bruce Wayne and Alfred"-like dialogues with his butler. His surprise attack on pete was good and the fight in the mansion too, but could have been far BETTER.
I hope they bring back Venom, explore his origins leaving open the path for a Venom franchise and also introduce a secondary enemy like Carnage or Goblin himself.
The butler said he healed Norman's chest that night, so that should mean, Norman may have faked his death and will be back to avenge his son, and mastermind a real hell in Spidey's life.
I think the butler just said he "treated his wounds" or something. Just like cleaned him up so I think he really is dead, at least I hope so... Keeping another Goblin character through to the 4th movie would be annoying.
I wouldn't say the movie was "lame" though, just maybe not as good as hoped or worth the $250 million they put into it. But when compared to movies like X-Men 3 or Superman Returns, it's a masterpiece.
I liked the film. I thought it was good. My friends didn't like it and what I read was a bit... well mixed. I watched it tonight and I must say it isn't bad at all. The only problem I had was when Peter started dancing down the street. It was funny at first (for about 20 seconds) but soon became tiresome and a bit cheesy. Any film could be better in areas and many good films could of been worse. I'm not a hardcore Spider-Man fan, but I know a good film when I see one, and this was good!
Please, everyone... do not ridicule or dog out someone who "dares" speak negatively about Spider-Man 3. Clearly we are all comic book fans. We all eagerly awaited for this film to come out. I was counting the days down. Any plans come up for the day it opened, I had switched to specifically see this film.
With all that said, this film not only did not live up to the hype, it fell off the chart completely. Much like how wonderful Superman 1 was, and then 2 was good (even if it was a Richard Lester film), and then Superman 3 was piss poor garbage, and Supes 4 was a pile of dog crap.
Spidey 1 was good. I enjoyed it a lot. Spidey 2, I fell in love with. A perfect superhero film, much like Superman 1, Batman Begins and X-Men 2.
The problem with 3 is that the story/script was not in the same vein as the first 2 films. Story, character development, and flow was all sacrificed to make dumb one liners and jokes. JJJ listening to Ted Raimi go on about "How, Wow, Now" was a waste, for example.
How many of those one liner jokes will be funny once you view the film a 2nd or 3rd time? Not as much if in fact not at all. Then we have left is story, and that is not good.
Weak story points:
1) Peter's "people like me" ego in the beginning made him selfish & unlikeable. His crying made him girlie and annoying. His change & dancing to Travolta/Borat when possessed made him ridiculous. Him asking help from Harry at the end made him simply weak. How does a Spidey fan not even like Spidey in his own film? Peter should never have kissed Gwen upside down.
2) Why doesn't Peter tell MJ about Harry and the fight they had? She is his girlfriend and obviously knows he is Spidey.
3) The symbiote costume is simply that... a costume that Peter puts in his drawer. What happened to it morphing to street clothes and slowly making Peter an unlikeable & dangerous bad guy? Dangerous... not Borat.
4) Spidey was thrown into and through bricks and buildings. He was banged around metal beams and the ground. The Sandman hammered away at him like 5 or 6 times and Spidey's chest did not cave in. What is he, Wolverine times 10 with the healing factor? Spit up blood or something. I must also add this... how ridiculous and annoying was that british female newscaster who kept reporting about Spidey's situation? "How much more can he take, ladies and gentlemen?" Ughhhh.
5) MJ was unlikeable because here she knows that her boyfriend is Spidey. He risks his life daily, and she was totally selfish towards him. Even to the point of kissing Harry. The theater groaned when she did that. She stayed unlikeable throughout the film. No one cared when she and Peter looked in each others eyes at the end. In fact, people were happy the film was over. Oh yeah, who told Kirsten Dunst that she can sing?
6) Gwen Stacy... underused. Sandman... underused. Venom ( oh excuse me, he has no name)... underused. Stick with what has worked for you in the first 2 films. 1 villian, with maybe a 2nd lurking. Better character development when done that way.
7) When MJ is threatened by Harry, why doesn't she signal Peter, while breaking up with him, that Harry is behind this farce? A small signal... a wink, a nod, a silent word (danger). He is freaking Spider-Man. Warn him!!! Say anything!!!! God, that was frustrating. Did she forget she was dating a superhero???
8) Doc Connors is shown a piece of the symbiote by Peter. Doc is amazed at what he sees and says I have never seen anything like it ever. What stopped him from calling NASA or someone, seeing he has clearly something from out of this world? No, he calls back Peter and tells him that he hopes he is not wearing this symbiote. What??? Doc is a smart guy and should have put 2 and 2 together seeing Spidey is wearing all black and is acting different. It should have been Spider-Man approaching Doc about getting his new black costume checked out. Then when Doc realizes it's dark nature, he warns Spidey. Much like in the comics when Spidey approached Reed Richards.
9) Too many coincidences. A meteor with a symbiote just happens to land near Peter. Eddie Brock Jr. works at the Bugle and is dating Gwen Stacy who happens to be Peter's lab partner and his #1 competition as photographer. Gwen's dad is a police captain who happens to call in Peter and aunt May about Sandman killing uncle Ben, and Gwen happens to need rescuing from a building that is falling apart... etc. Believe me, the list continues.
Strong Point
1) I thought Bruce Campbell was the best and funniest thing in this film. Keep him coming back.
Congrat to the film for making 148 million plus, but it is not a good film.
