Aslan = heavy-handed allegory. Allegory is great when done properly, but not when it's accomplished with all the subtlety of a kick to the balls. And there's other books in the series that are even more overt in their Christian leg-humping. It's fine as children's lit, just not as legitimate fantasy literature for an adult reader. On par with the early Harry Potter books, but not up to the standards set by the genre's best.
So eat away...don't don't pour too much milk and get me soggy.
INDEED! A very sucky, sucky movie! And I only saw the first hour. For most of which I was trying to figure out if the lead actor was attractive or weird looking.

1) Agreed, Aslan is a very heavy handed allegory. But that nonetheless is an interesting allusion to the Christian Messiah. I agree with your in that generally I also prefer a much more subtle allegory in characters (Which the Narnia series is also full of) I read, so I was pleasantly surprised to read such a well written series containing overtly Christian orientated characters.
2) ....EDIT Someone beat me to this point....
Which is why the movie works for children. As an adult, I felt almost insulted by how obvious they make it. So like I said, works as children's lit. Just not at the level set by nearly any sophisticated work in the genre.
Besides, I'm going to give my kids The Golden Compass to read when they get into middle school.
i loved the golden compass, not because of the message where they "kill god" which i find to be bullshit, since it was an angel POSING, but because it was BEAUTIFULLY written. i enjoyed the third book the most however. i read it when i was 12 or 13, it was my fav series. it still remains in my top 5.
that makes me so so very sad. yes there is. it was over 9000 times better. seriously read the book, and never ever compare that book to that movie adaptation piece of shit. they killed that book. i cried
