Head of the Foreign Affairs Senate Committee, so that boosts Obama's "weakness" on foreign issues. He's also a Catholic with Working Class routes so that apparently appeals to Catholics and blue collar workers. Hes also pro-choice which should keep the pro-abortionists happy.
It is tactically clever... in that it should cover these perceived weaknesses... or alternatively it could potentially actually highlight them further... I'm sure it will be noted in the media on the reporting of this choice the reason for Biden's choosing is clearly because of the perception of inexperience... and as noted several times people aren't voting for #2...
Good at foriegn policy, okay, since when does the president do what the VP says? (Putting Reagan/Bush Bush/Cheney jokes aside)
Good at the job of VP, the only job I can think of that the VP does is President of Senate and succeeding the President, but Biden isn't really that good in either of those. Not the best anyway.
Maybe there are some things I'm missing here, but I still don't get it.
Also, wouldn't Biden help more job-wise if he stayed at the FASC?

I know the McCain camp is already runninng ads of Biden from the primaries saying that Obama couldn't be the President because "it takes more than on the job training" and that McCain "would be a great president."
May not make much difference, but it's funny to me that he picked somebody who was critical of him and supported McCain (to a certain degree) before he was asked to be VP.
Though I suppose if McCain picks Romney it'd be the same thing.

I've said it and I'll keep saying it: McCain should pick Huckabee.
He's the only one of the VP candidates that has some fame, is known and liked (particularly among younger conservatives who were going for him or Ron Paul), and was the runner up in the primary.
(people know Romney and Giulianni too, but weren't thrilled about voting for them)
Plus, he could get some commercials with Chuck Norris!
Bayh would have been an awful awful attack dog, which is something Obama really needed as he himself isn't great at attacking McCain (just not in his nature). Plus he needed an expert on foreign policy which is Obama's great perceived weakness, I think Biden was the best possible selection.
As far as Biden going after Obama during the primary, I don't think anyone other than McCain supporters will care. Obama can deflect that quite easily by saying that him picking Biden just proves that he doesn't surround himself with 'yes-men' and wants people around him who will challenge him when they think he's making a mistake, which has been a point Obama's been making from the beginning.
Plus, McCain will very likely pick Romney, if he does there are things Romney said that are far worse than anything Biden said.
