Sadly, it's true.
It sets a bad precedent. We want people to report but the reports should be valid. People use it as a way to bring heat on their forum nemesis.
how would it be bad precedent to ban someone who misuses the report function? that wouldn't discourage people from using report when well deserved...ie when someone is clearly member bashing, or spamming, etc.
2. mods get fed up with tons and tons of frivolous and trivial and repetitive reports
3. solution: make sure report is being properly used, and not abused
4. concrete step: give warnings to people who abuse the report button (ie. the dumb shit Bada pointed out with 'superman wins'...that does not deserve being reported, it deserves being ignored)
5. result: the VS forum will see a tremendous decrease in reports
6. beneficial side effect: global mods gain a more favorable view of the VS forum
Yes, those are good steps. And the last time this forum was in trouble, most everyone stepped up for a while. Then we all just fell into our old habits.
Raz has full confidence in the global mods.
For me the funny part of that is that I suspect a lot of people here would think me a DC fanboy if they had any opinion about it when I read tons more Marvel but then there are threads where OPs put DC light speed types against MU characters that would be statues by comparison or total mismatches and then get mad when anyone thinks the DC guy wins. The thing that gets me most is people ignoring the abilities of the characters but doing it selectively.
One thing that might help is to look at the high-end abilities of some of the characters controversy often arises about and have some sort of official stance as to what their high-end feats are for debate purposes. But of course, if there are no consequences for ignoring those feats, people will ignore them.
Sure we can all use the 'ignore' button but that's a temporary solution. You end up with those not adhering to the rules dominating the place.
I understand peoples hesitance and all due to the potential for abuse, but if things got taken too far and no one liked it another revision could be attempted. As is, I don't think productive discussions will ever be the "norm" as everyone's allowed to debate however they want. If that were the case they wouldn't need an established format for Presidential Debates because the candidates could just get up there and discuss things in a civil manner. If two 40+ year old men who are attempting to sway the opinions of the entire nation on live TV can't behave themselves in a debate without a specific format doesn't it seem a little unrealistic to expect a bunch of nameless/faceless people of varying ages, backgrounds, and possibly cultures to do so? I mean sure, in an ideal world we could probably all get along without incident but I don't see that happening any time soon.
