these days i do. back then when i used to come on here alot i posted all the time. i had a couple threads going on here and there. i just sit back and watch what happens. read what these stupid trolls try to do and stuff. i think people need to just ignore them and stop answering there posts. dont add fuel to the fire.
Actually I don't have an issue with what you said here. In fact, over on ComiXtreme, the mod there talked about going with average showings in one debate and I was okay with it because, as far as I saw, they have no specific rules for debating. They don't have any rule about debating based on high-end feats so you can't really criticize them for something that isn't a rule there. Here it is a rule.
I was thinking about this today. In one respect, the whole 'going with the average' or 'character-based' as some insist, has some merits. For example, if I were to randomly dig out and read a dozen issues of Wonder Woman and a dozen issues of the Hulk, I would probably draw the conclusion that the Hulk would have a decent chance of winning 6+ out of 10. On an average, I'd say he seems stronger and more durable. She's faster but in a fight, she seldom seems a zillion times faster. So if we went with the average, she'd hit him far more than he hit her but I think he'd overwhelm her with sheer brute force more often than not (like berserk Superman did).
I'm aware there are other factors, the lasso, that she has the power of flight and such, which is why I say at least 6 or more but NOT 10/10. Also, I don't read Justice League but I'm told she is more powerful there than in her own comic.
There are also other merits for the average or general showing. For example, and forgive me I really don't mean to target anybody but its just a recent example that is fresh in my mind.
Let's say you've got somebody who is, oh, a Wonder Woman expert to the point that even those who disagree with him would still admit he is the WW guru. He knows everything there is to know about WW. He may or may not know a lot about her opponent but he really doesn't have to. He knows almost everything about her so he can slam everybody with the highest feats she has ever done. Those disagreeing might think, 'Well, the general feeling I get is that so-and-so would win but I'm not a guru of that character or any specific character so I can't invoke his ultimate feats. But I've read so-and-so and I've read WW and I know that generally he's more powerful but I can't equal or top the feats he's laid on the table for WW.'
Again, going with a more general or average power level would make it so that people who are ringers (ie. gurus who know everything about a specific character) can't just win by slamming everybody with every rare feat ever done.
On the flipside, if the forum went in that direction, they might as well eliminate most of the rules. The PIS rule would be pretty much irrelevant and I still think it would become too much of an excuse to lowball a character someone doesn't like and play favorites.
Also, without any specific standard like high-end feats, there's no basis for deciding who 'wins' the debate or any real basis for a mod to rule that someone is ignoring feats and such. In the comics, power levels are all over the place so I think you do need some measurable standard where all characters in the fight are measured by that standard. If there is no standard, there's no real debate. Each person can just post their opinion which may be sound or may be based on nothing but there's no point to debating each other because there's no standard of evidence to debate.

i think it's worth asking--what made the vs forum work in the past? has something changed? when i first joined, i thought it was great. in general, though i've not been around the last 2 months or so, i STILL have a good time when i drop in.
delph was right earlier--it's about personal accountability--i.e--growing up. tough to enforce personal accountability ina forum setting predicated on anonymity, in particular re: a site where we discuss battles between comicbook characters. not exactly a genetic breeding ground for maturity.
if someone bothers you--ignore them. laugh at them (in real life, don't flame), report if you MUST. get thicker skin, stop taking everything so personally. one thing i've never understood--when some sock makes some mod-bashing thread that gets closed down almost immediately, there are STILL multiple posts in the thread. why? it's stupid, meant to get a rise--ignore the thread, ignore the poster. recall why MOST are here--to entertain entertaining discussion.
