Correct. Cobb and Mal reached limbo by accident. So how did he know that only one more dream-level (a 4th layer) was required to reach limbo the second time? Better yet, considering Ariadne had no prior knowledge of limbo, how in the hell was she able to postulate that little factoid? (it was HER idea to retrieve Fischer from limbo in the first place)..? Overlooked plot-point, perhaps?
And did anyone else get the feeling that the 'inescapable' quality of limbo had been grossly exaggerated? I think Cobb bent the truth about limbo because he didn't trust himself there. He knew Mal would constantly tempt him to stay, and/or harm anyone he was with -- so he made it out to be this hellish place that would ultimately consume you... But think about it: all he and Mal had to do was commit suicide via train to exit limbo the first time (just like ANY other dream-level).
The ease in which Cobb knew he could leave limbo is likely why he didn't hesitate to stay there to rescue Saito. He knew that once Mal had been dealt with, and once he had found Saito, they were only two bullets away from waking up. It seems that as long as you know you are in a dream, or you are with someone who can remind you of that fact, limbo is really no different than any other dream-level. In fact, it would probably be the best place in which to hone your manipulative skills (as you would have a completely uninhibited 'pallet' to work with.)
Cobb was just being selfish with it.

well, if i'm the one doing the experimenting, i wouldn't go that far in the first try.. i would do it gradually.. that's what probably happened with mal and cobb.. during the last experiment, they stumbled into limbo.. it wasn't like it was their first and only experiment.. they experimented once, twice, until they stumbled into the limbo level.. it would be a little reckless to just dive in without knowing what's lurking behind the proverbial curtain..
i think cobb purposely let all that time pass in limbo so that he can prove one point.. that inception is not only a theory, it can be done.. he was being more manipulative than selfish.. he didn't know that mal would be driven to suicide.. he took the risk of planting an idea in mal's head and it came back to haunt him in the end.. plus, his prior knowledge probably takes away some level of difficulty in escaping limbo..
I seen this movie for the first time the other night, unfortunately I seemed to get lost after the 1st hour,so I really need to watch this again to get a better understanding of it,before I give a more detailed opinion on the movie.
Ive watched it three times, love it. I think he might[SPOILER - highlight to read]: still be dreaming at the end, as when he came out of the dream with the lift and was all panicy, he didnīt let his spinning thing spin to the end an prove he wasnīt deaming, not only that, the japenese bloke asked him if he was ok in an odd way
Just watched this now, thought it was brilliant! I didn't find it confusing like a lot of people have said (except for maybe the first few minutes). I got the impression that the spinning thing was about to start wobbling as the screen blacked out for the credits.
I dont think there is any definitive answer,I think they just wanted us to make our own mind up,whether he was still dreaming or not,I chose to believe that he was, myself
Pretty sure $$$$$ trumps what you/we think. To them I mean.

why'd you start with this as if i'd said something ridiculous?
Well, they obviously wanted the audience to have something to talk about, which is why they cut to black before we could be 100% certain. The reason i say it wasn't a dream is because he said the spinning thing never stops while in a dream, which means it stays in motion... when it was spun at the end, there was a blatant wobble which (imo) indicated that what we saw wasn't a dream.
