he did not make elven language!! Some people play at the computer in their free time (me) and others simply invent fully functional languages(tolkien). He did set one of his languages to the elves, one of his characters and nothing more.
I'm certain i have encountered elves in older legends then tolkien's works.

yes, yes...he needed elements of this sort to complete his very detailed work with this whole universe. I mean elves needed languages in this thing, but this doesn't eman he invented them.

Got this from some site. Don't know if it acknowledges / clarifies the fact that Tolkien created the orcs. But a very interesting piece of information nonetheless. big grin

ORCS Also called: Orks, Goblins; Sindarin: Yrch (sg. Orch), Quenya (Valinorean): Urqui (sg. Urko), Quenya (Noldorin): Orqui or Orkor (sg. Orko), Adunaic: (sg.) Urku or Urkhu, Black Speech: Uruk (for lesser breeds: Snaga), Druedainic: Gorgun, Khuzdul: Rakhas (sg. Rukhs);

All (or most of) these names stemming from Proto-Eldarin root *RUKU, "something that causes fear". Sindarin also Glamhoth: "host of tumult" {1}.

A race of evil beings, bred by Melkor in mockery of the Elves of Ilúvatar. The first Orcs were probably bred out of Elves, although some may have been lesser corrupted Maiar. Later on the Orcs were undoubtably bred both out of Elves, Men, and Maiar {2}.

Orcs were creatures of myth long before tolkien wrote anything.
it was his works that popularised them yes

blink
Were they? confused

I always thought Tolkien invented them... their name was supposed to be based on some old english word I dont remember confused
Though if coming from OE it would have had to be written "ork" - no words derived from OE end with c

Some also think the name is related to the word "orcus", a name of the underworld...

He just gave this new name to the goblins etc that already existed in mythology confused and gave the creatures a new origin...

There was no copyright yes

Tolkien didn't invent hobbits (they were a mythical fey like creature) , so he may not have invented orcs.

talking bout this to my brother earlier, he's been readin the books and from lotr story orcs are apparently 'tortured elves' and that they don't want to fight anything, just being controlled by salron or whoever that eyeball is lol, infact they want to live in peace by themselves.

but who knows, i haven't read the books and mythology had such creatures long before tolkien, as said before, he gave them a new birth smile
