Ergh, while I was at my driver instructor he managed to throw an earth pillar at me, set me around a ring of solid earth with spikes made out of magma protruding from me for no apparent reason.

Very Well. He didn't form the ring as you thought but a Wall. Oh and they could still escape as He didn't build a wall towards an area where the fighting wouldn't take place thus allowing them to get out.
