So I cant find a legit source for the budget (think Cameron and Disney purposely hiding it). But by the look of it im assuming it’s probably the most expensive movie of all time.
Anyway this article claims variety has inside sources saying $1.4bill was approx the break even point:
So about $1.4 billion to break even seems about right if you factor in marketing and such.
It's already there now, so it'd be hard to imagine the later sequels not getting greenlit.
Cameron needs to know if they're greenlit prior to finishing 3, because he said he'll wrap up 3 as the finale if he has to. But he really wants to make 4 and 5.
^ Makes sense. And yeah sequels should be green lit, but from studios POV they still have to consider what a financial risk a $1.4bill break even point is. I mean even if this goes on to gross $2bill, the next film may not make close to that (remember how Force Awakens made $2bill, but Last Jedi $1.3bill, or how Black Panther 1.3bill but Wakanda forever like 850mill).
I know they took the risk with this one, but that was probably greenlit by Fox, and they were probably looking at how Avatar1 was the biggest movie of all time.
Still, any studio would be crazy to bet against Cameron.
You're not wrong, it's still a risk given the massive expense of these films, but yeah, James Cameron does sequels well and he spends the money appropriately. Also, I think a lot of the budget went to some heavy initial research and development, so the subsequent sequels probably won't be quite as expensive now that that work is finished.
Watched this Didn't like as much as the first. The anti.whaling message was over the top, but the climax sequence payoff made it worth it. Plot.holes are bigger. Even more cliche Not.a fan.of Jesus Kiri. Liked that Jake properly.got.to.kick ass mano e mano.
Zoe Saldana was frigging awesome in this movie.

I love the movie. The whaling portions are some of the best parts. Saw it twice in the theater so far (I'd like to do more, but that will probably be it). But I will be honest that I think the length was a bit too much for me in the theater. Both times i was a bit exhausted sitting that long and the 3D glasses especially were too damn tight (not sure why they make those things tight enough to fit a shrunken pigmy!) Also the last act [SPOILER - highlight to read]: (the hand to hand fight between Jake and Quaritch with Neytiri jumping around too) was a bit choppy for the big screen. It was a little better the second time, so I actually think that third act will play better with repeat viewings on a smaller home screen. But the rest of it...? *chef's kiss* ...was amazing on the big screen. Just pure cinema ecstasy.
It's okay, Stilt. You don't need to put me on suicide watch. I'm actually a little relieved... because I think he would be a bit distracting. I actually have a hard time imagining how Cameron would make a role for him to fit.
