I didn't find carver's analogy hard to follow at all, actually. I try to put an extra effort into understanding people's train of thought, because that's where most confusion comes from.
No time frame is given, but generally speaking the intent of speed lines isn't to show movement rates over a long period of time, but within that single panel..
Isn't there an unwritten, yet generally accepted rule about the time between panels?
Yeah, Scott McCloud argued it in his books... I'll have to dig up "Understanding comics"..
Could've sworn I've seen one or two Vs boards around the web that actually tried setting a figure for how much time passes between each panel...
Anyways, you're correct. It very well could've been 29 minutes exactly, and Gotenks was boasting.
But I'm just saying when it comes to unbroken racing lines like the kind we're seeing in that panel, I've never seen such that wasn't designed to indicate speedy, rapid movement in a short time frame.
Well, it couldnt have been 29 minutes because he said he took a nap and then he woke up with a minute to spare. It was some seconds in regards to him circling around the planet.
It had to been some seconds because they showed all of this earth flying in one panel whereas they could have spread it out in more panels if it wasnt really that fast.
Then we have gotenks admitting how fast he was going when he said that he went around the earth numerous of times, and THEN took a nap with a minute to spare. Yeah, it was pretty obvious the writer was showing some>>Flash material.
Do realize that...for it to be even longer than a second..It's still slower than light speed as we see him only do like 5 or 6 laps then him landing...Which is still slower than Flash, the guy who ran to the end of time in just a couple seconds..Course doesn't really matter anybody is automatically slower than the guy who can just steal your speed to make himself faster.

Naah, I dont think it was on Flash level of speed either since flash is the god of speed but I honestly think you all are discrediting what was shown in that scan.
Yeah, the Speed Force is really something that belonged in the pre crisis era. Flash is like the modern version of Supermans "pull powers out of your arse" as the plot demands.
Piccolo wouldn't need to be 'searching' for him. Ki sensing would let Piccolo know exactly where Gotenks was when he stopped, and when he was flying around. It just took Piccolo that long to catch up to him after he stopped.
And yes, no matter how fast he went it would be pointless to devote more than one panel to a 12-18 page comic...... It was just to illustrate speed, and him going around the planet multiple times. He could have done it in a second, or two hours and the same panel would have been just fine to use. You aren't going to draw three different panels of him just circling the planet a bunch of times. It would be pointless, and a waste of space. Of course he is. That's the real secret to his super speed.
