Yes. Faster than ever in fact (latest attempt at stopping it likely made it worse).

Hows come they don't just use a giant dirt devil? Vacuum cleaners today have become rather sophisticated, Mine can pick up screws and other large items, im sure a really big vacuum cleaner could suck up all that oil

The damages caused by the exxon valdez spill, to name just one, are still there. It'll take decades for the ecossystem to cleanse itself and heal over completelly. Their criminal neglect should warrant the death penalty.

As bad as this spill is:

http://www.arcticsecurity.org/?p=391

hmmmm...

EDIT: sorry, not to just troll links, it is a short article about oil drilling in the arctic ocean. Canadian officials have said we would be lucky to clean 5% of the oil from an arctic spill, and that the conventional methods of stopping one wouldn't be effective in arctic water. The WWF has said it would be a larger ecological disaster than the current one.

taken with respect to global climate change, the arctic is one of the regions poised to see some of the most serious impacts. Does this increased fragility put these offshore platforms at more of a risk? Just more perspective on the real risks of offshore drilling, certainly this is pertinant to American drilling in Alaska.

This is a serious environmental issue...this has already effected the gulf more than most realise. Birds and seals on the beaches isn't the half of it, whales of various species are swimming and eating this crap in various quantities...

I'm just wondering how long it'll take Barack Obama to realise that America caused the problem. The only role BP has to play in this fiasco is that they own the rights to drill in the area. The rig is owned by an American company called Transocean, the equipment used to drill and that inevitably caused the problem was American equipment, the people working on the rig...were American. Yet, Obama is quick to point the finger...the only reason BP are the only company funding the clean up process is because no-one else in the world has the expertise or the funding to clean something this size up...

This could have happened anywhere.

If Bp can afford a billion dollars a day, i'm sure they can afford functioning equipment. To say this is America's fault is ridiculous to me. How many countries around the world rely on oil. Now, if you said it's the Governments fault that it is taking so long to resolve this issue, well, then i could understand where you're coming from.

I'm not ridiculing the American people - it seems they've been kept in the dark about the raw facts. But you're right, I was way too broad and ambiguous with my accusation. It doesn't change the fact that as soon as this crisis started Obama pointed the finger straight at BP.

Before the crisis started - about a month ago now - the American Government gave Transocean the "all-clear" to drill at that depth. I wouldn't say it was the American Governments fault that they haven't resolved the problem quicker, the depth drill at had need been drilled at before, it was a necessary risk taken by the rig as far as business goes. It just so happens in the process they burst a pipe causing an environmental catastrophe.

What I would say, is that for a President that claimed he would bring change and do the right thing, he's done and awful lot of nothing for the last month. Telling the American people that BP are at fault, even to the point where the British media have seemingly given up trying to explain Transocean owned everything...so now even the British people aren't able to make head-or-tails of the whole situation.

Obama..,yeah. The only thing he has done since the start of his presidency is send this country into a further decline. For being such a foreign friendly guy, i would think he would be welcoming the assistance of other countries, instead of blaming.

It blew my mind when i heard that, Obama had just now ordered a meeting with the heads of Bp to hear out their plans.

I'm sorry for getting so defensive. I appreciate the effort you made to clarify your point. It just pisses me off when my countries people and i are measured by the decisions that our Government makes. Respect, Common sense and honesty are certainly qualities that most middle class Americans possess and not just strive for. Our leaders, however, always seem to lack all of these traits, just like most other governments.

This entire catastrophe is becoming less concerning and more frightening.

I know what you mean, it seems like as soon as a cliche is interpreted within a countries social structure the rest of the country gets pulled into that stereotype...sorry if I did offend confused

I think Obama has got way in over his head. It's all good and well that he tried to make history and understood that the country needed to become a world power with relations as opposed to whatever Bush thought his role as President was lol. But now he's in the big seat he doesn't know what to do, past his Presidential Campaign he was ****ed...

I dare say that if he doesn't soon realise what he needs to do for America economically and reputation-ally he's going to be quickly hated and ridiculed.
