Ok, and?

There's nothing magical about Superman, not one thing.

Just saying, shit like that (Supes talking in space, TIE's exploding in space and making sounds) happens all the time in movies. Armageddon FTW.

Awesome, as I've not said "Superman is magic".

You said his abilities are like magic. They're not.

They break the laws of physics just as much as magic.

They both defy the laws of physics. So in that sense, they're similar. That's not me saying "Superman is powered by magic." That's Captain Marvel.

Calm down.

Brick-laying vision (one of the most ridiculous scenes) can be said to be telekinesis. SM3 and SM4 sucked so much.

Now him straightening the tower of Pisa and then putting it back slanted and it somehow not crumbling down, that's another WTF.

Memory-erasing kiss, telepathy.

HOLY SHIT! He's just like pre-crisis supes! lol

That is borderline comedy.

I haven't even seen all the superman (Reeves) films. Just 1 and part of 2...I believe.

He has TK with the brick-laying thing (better than Jean Grey)? He has super (Think Xavier levels) of telepathy by being able to erase memories?

I mean...DAMN!

Superman is magic. I'm not even kidding.

Reeves was basically Silver-Age Superman and the writers went on to add on-demand-powers to fit any retard scene they thought of.

He kisses Lois and erases her memory of her knowing that Kent=Superman. Lame scene.

He also speaks every language fluently.

If you want a good laugh at truly bad movies, watch SM3 and SM4.

That's why I didn't see those films: that looked like such horrible shit that I could not be arsed to watch them even though I like comic book movies.

No. It's a fallacy to exclude things that might be possible but aren't shown on screen, while it is not to make an educated guess that things that weren't shown might happen. If the latter wasn't the case, any argument for Superman assuming FTL in atmosphere would be instantly void. Your choice.

quote:

Are you suggesting that the wind is going to stop him or something?

No. Applying suspension of disbelief, I'm merely trying to figure out why Superman, if he was capable of FTL flight, wasn't utilizing this ability throughout the entirety of the movie to speedblitz in and out of every scenario, which would - just as example - prevented the ridiculous time-reversal plot.

As suspension of disbelief renders the "PIS" explanation void, another hypothesis has to be taken into consideration with something existing within the atmosphere that doesn't exist in outer space being the most obvious thing. Right?

No, he's suggesting that physics would limit a character who doesn't dwell in the realm of physics. Which is a nonsense argument, if we bring in logical limitations now to an illogical character, it's basically gimping the character for no other reason than that he destroys favorite characters and we can't have that, can we.

Superman lifting the island defied physics, no need to start now.

Oh. You mean, like you're trying to limit magic by the introduction of physics? If we exclude logical limitations, than the magical field protecting Hogwarts can't be overpowered, unless some really powerful magic is used.

I'd also like to point out a very good point you brought up (or was it Creshosk?): if Superman slams into Hogwarts' shield charms (if we assume they hold up to blunt physical force), it would slam the whole place into the ground and Newton's First Law of Motion will cause everyone to experience a nice head-bursting when they hit the ceiling due it taking far longer than the movement of the entire grounds than it would for the pull of gravity to take over and keep them on the ground. That's an insta-win, assuming the shields can hold up.

This makes absolutely no sense.
If we assume that the shield survives the impact, than the energy is either absorbed and nullfied or evenly distributed through the shield. It wouldn't simply pass through and hit the castle. Neither would it act like a snow globe, because there is no attachment between the barrier and the castle.

You are aware of the fact that HP Wizards are commonly breaking the rules of physics? Some applications including the distortion of space (Tents at Quidditch World Cup in GoF), time (time-turner in PoA) and the ability to teleport themselves instantious to any place they desire.

quote:
If we take the depth of atmosphere capable of generating friction with when Superman re-enters the atmosphere then the exosphere and thermosphere can be ruled out which leaves us mesosphere and shallower which is a depth of 85km which is also where small meteors are shown burning up.

roll eyes (sarcastic)

The Kármán line is at an altitude of 100 kilometers and friction enough to generate recognizeable aerodynamic deceleration is already present at an altitude of 120 kilometers.

quote:

Now...He'd be travelling at 299,792km per second meaning it would take him 0.0002835 seconds before impacting on the ground. So the question is how much would the friction generated in that time slow his momentum?

Not really my area...Anyone?

An entry at an angle above 5° (as in "straight line to the ground") is pretty suicidal. At 5° the decelartion is already equal to 10 times the gravitational acceleration (98 m/s) when flying with 7.8 km/s of speed. At 170.000 km/h and 9° it's 500 G (4900 m/s). When doing this at speed of light and hitting the atmosphere with an 45-90° angle, Superman would decelarete very fast, which is, pretty much implied in the movie, where he goes from FTL to mere supersonic speed in split seconds, if I remember correctly.

And he would be exposed to temperature equal to his speed in m/s (a mathematical coincidence). Can Supermans face take 300 million °K? I seriously doubt it.

So assuming that he would make it to the ground with anything close to speed of light requires two no-limit-fallacies. Which means, that it doesn't work.

quote:

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say not that much...So even if he impacts at 0.9999999% the speed of light then it's going to cause far more damage than is needed to obliterate Hogwarts and everyone in it before they even have time to think about thinking.

I'd say if he tries to perform this stunt, he would be vaporized in the atmosphere or would be decelerated so fast that his impact wouldn't generate that much force.

I'm not trying to limit the use of magics to known physics, as they defy physics.

Your "logical limitation" of Superman's powers is still unfounded, for the same reasons as noted above.
