...so far, the story is unrelated to the original alien film.
But it is related. We've learned more about the elusive "Space Jockey" and his peeps, yo.

i said the STORY is not related, hence why its not a prequel. it takes place in a the same universe with some of the shared characters.
that be like me saying star wars the old republic is a prequel to the original trilogy. same universe, unrelated story.

Lindelof's script has leaked now: Paradise
Get it while you still can! The studio apparently pulled Spaihts' script down, and this one likely won't last long either.. I'm enjoying Spaihts' script. It's answering questions that deleted scenes didn't...

Dude, you're 55 pages into this thread.
Everything you say HAS already been brought up, discussed & dissected...you're just bringing old debates up again.

I finished reading Spaihts' script. I'm going to try to list some of the major differences. I'll start by saying that it is a more direct Alien prequel. It ends and would lead directly into Alien . It reads much more like any other Alien movie. It has the same themes (example: Weyland's motivation for funding the mission in Spaihts' script is simply to get the Engineers' terraforming technology - kind of boring). But it is pretty darn well written and certainly would have been a stand-out standard Alien movie, but I'm glad they touched it up and elevated it to something a little different. So, some of the main differences (not in any particular order; and I'm leaving little things out like Shaw's original name was Watts, and the ship was called the Magellan, the Engineers are earless for some reason, heh, etc)...
quote: 1. Weyland is not on board (his desire to live forever is nowhere to be seen)
2. The black goo kind of turned into scarab beetles and ate victims and infected them or something? Something seemed a little different there...
3. It is of course set on LV-246, the planet in the original Alien.
4. There's different stuff like: Holloway gets infected and births a Xenomorph, etc..
5. Watts (Shaw) wants to go to the Engineer homeworld for greater discovery/glory, not to find out why they changed their minds and wanted to kill us). Sort of competing with Weyland's glory with the terraforming technology
6. David is more diabolical (i.e. it's not as ambiguous). He sort of re-programs himself by learning to read trinary code, so he no longer has to obey Vickers, his master. He still gets his head ripped off, though. lol
7. The Ultramorph (Deacon) bursts from the Engineer while the Engineer is piloting the juggernaut... he's in his pilot chair.
8. Instead of the Engineer hunting Watts (Shaw), the Ultramorph that bursts from the Engineer hunts her.
A few other little tidbits:
quote: 1. Shaw gets some kind of Engineer goggles that lets her "see like them"? "Gods-eye-view." Yeah, weird.. I call them "God vision" goggles.. lol
2. The big mounds are pyramids
3. Holloway find the cockpit, not David, and I think that's when he gets infected.
4. Watts (Shaw) gets face-hugged, and I think David was largely responsible, which leads to her C-section (instead of being impregnated by Holloway).
5. Vicker's has some soldiers on the ship that she enlists to help ("Weyland's security detail")... must have been borrowing from James Cameron.. heh
6. Holloway and Watts (Shaw) go to the moon where Weyland is to try to sell the mission to him and they expect to be rejected, but it turns out that Weyland already knew about their research and totally said yes, only under one condition: any technology that they find he has the rights to.
7. It goes into a little bit more depth about Holloway's research on the subject of human progression. He's traced that every few thousand years (or something) there seemed to be a huge jump in human DNA and in human technology etc. He attributes this to the visits from the Engineers.
8. The excavation scene at the beginning of the film takes place underwater.. probably would have been quite a bit more expensive to film (I imagine that would have been changed even if this script WAS filmed).
9. Fifield and Milburn get lost because they leave the map device behind.. ah HA!
Anyway, it's a really fun read. Definitely a good script. Laid the foundation for Lindelof to come in and change a few things to make it a little bit more original and intersting, in my opinion. The main thing being: Weyland tagging along because he's getting very old and doesn't want to die and have to end his fortune, fame, and glory. That and David is more ambiguous and not blatantly evil. Ridley understandably wanted to change these things because he did them already in Alien !! I'm gonna read Lindelof's script soon, too. Hopefully that will lend some more insight into what they're planning... muhaha..

I like the idea of the God Goggles.
I just really found it odd (in the movie) that there would be a control panel randomly put in the corridor that depicted the hologram recording of The Engineers fleeing.

Toys R Us has these figures in now. It's a Toys R Us exclusive, so they're the only place who has 'em. $30, but they're quite nicely made and fun to pose and display...

And in other news...

Noomi Rapace has met with Ridley Scott and has confirmed that work on the Prometheus Sequel script is currently under way! The news comes to us from The Playlist, who caught up with Ms. Rapace while she was promoting her recent film, Dead Man Down. When asked about the status of Prometheus 2, Rapace revealed that:
"They're working on the script. I met Ridley in London a couple of weeks ago. I would love to work with him again and I know that he would like to do another one. It's just like we need to find the right story. I hope we will."

Following this, when asked about what she thought about the reaction Prometheus received after it's June, 2012 release this past summer, the actress replied:
"I love working with Ridley. It was pure joy," she said. "It was really hard work sometimes. My body was a complete mess - I had bruises and cuts and emotionally I was a bit slammed. But being in his world and his universe was such an amazing experience."
"And it's interesting because people, most people I've talked to who see the movie, see things that are quite different. Some people who see the movie many times and discover new things. There are all these religious aspects and there are very interesting conversations," Rapace explained. "And for me, if we do a second one, there are a lot of things to explore in there and to continue." She added: "I would love to do it."

It's great to hear that Prometheus 2 is in the works. With a projected late 2014 - early 2015 release date in mind, we can expect to hear a lot more on Prometheus' Sequel as we head into summer, 2013.
To re-cap, Damon Lindelof, one of the co-writers for Prometheus has publicly stated that he will NOT be involved in the sequel. But no word yet whether or not co-writer, Jon Spaihts will be returning to lend a hand on the story development.

quote:
Prometheus certainly raised many questions and many of which surround the mysterious Space Jockey, now more accurately known as Engineers. The beginning of Prometheus showcased a massive circular Alien space craft hovering over (what we believe to be) Earth. Moments later, an Engineer is introduced to us in nothing more than a robe and shorts. This Engineer sacrifices himself to create life on this new planet. After which, the massive, circular vessel leaves the planet's atmosphere never to be seen again.
Later on in the film, we are introduced to another Engineer, who sports a much "darker" look than the first Engineer from the beginning of the film. This Engineer has an agenda to wipe out Humanity by means of unleashing a deadly bio-weapon upon us.
One Engineer's goal is to create life, the other seemed to be bent on destroying life. This of course, raised much speculation among fans in the Prometheus Movie Forums. A theory was raised that there were two different factions of Engineers spread out across the Galaxy, one creating life, the other, destroying it. A classic battle of good and evil.
This week saw the rocky release of the highly anticipated FPS Aliens game by Sega and Gearbox Software, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Whether you liked the game or not, you have to appreciate the level of detail the game took to recreating specific events which took place in the films which it is based on. From the trike seen in the opening scenes of Aliens to the Facehugger clamped behind a table, sprayed with bullets in the Med Lab. A:CM houses many Easter eggs for hard core fans of the franchise to discover and one of these is particularly interesting as it directly relates to the mythology created by Prometheus.

Near the end of the single player campaign, you come across the crashed Derelict, as seen in both Alien and Aliens and inside you find the fossilized Space Jockey / Engineer sitting in his Pilot's chair. If you shoot at his head for a few seconds, you will trigger a digital recording, much like the one we see in Prometheus, when David activates the Orrey.

David Activates the Orrey in Prometheus
This recording depicts a battle between two very familiar Engineer space vessels. One, being the circular ship as seen in the opening scene of Prometheus and the other being the Jugernaut or Bone Ship seen at the end of Prometheus and also in Alien / Aliens. Please note folks, these are two different ships, the Juggernaut in Prometheus is NOT the same ship as the Dertelict seen in Alien / Aliens.
Moving on, this sequence is quite interesting as it further validates speculation that there are two factions of Engineers in the Universe, one fighting for good, and the other for evil. The good guys seem to be represented by the circular, "classic" Alien space ship, while the evil Engineer faction seems to represented by the oddly shaped, Bone Ship / Juggernaut vessels.
(please log in to view the image)
"Good" Engineers' Space Vessel
The recording also depicts the Juggernaut being shot down by the circular vessel (ie. the good guys). This insinuates, that the reason for the crashed Derelict on LV426 was not caused by an outbreak of Xenomorphs on board, but that it was the result of a blood feud between Engineer races.
(please log in to view the image)
"Evil" Engineers' Space Vessel
To take it one step further, the Engineers representing the circular vessel probably were attempting to prevent the first attack on Humanity by their evil counterparts, and thus duked it out in space over LV426, where the enemy ship ultimately lost and crashed down on the Moon's surface, which caused the Xenos to get loose and attack the injured Engineer / Space Jockey.
When you think about it, it makes sense. The evil Engineers host a bio-weapons lab on LV_223 (Prometheus) and are en route to deliver the first batch of baddies to Earth, but get intercepted by the "good" Engineers. LV426 was adjacent to LV_223, so they clearly didn't get very far before being shot down. Thus, the evil Engineers had to rethink their strategy and probably continued work on a more efficient way of eradicating our species, along with their "good" cousins. They probably also chose to upgrade from leathery eggs to Urns to preserve the organism inside better. Less potential for things to go wrong I suppose.
Anyways, this is just one of many fun Easter eggs scattered about throughout Aliens: Colonial Marines and I encourage you to play the game and find them all yourself!

I don't really care much about the game. I never had much of a desire to have a game based on Aliens. But that little theory is quite interesting. Will be interesting to see if it pans out..

Ha. Gotta love RedLetterMedia..
I think the allegory of Prometheus is dual layered.
Heres my theory:
[SPOILER - highlight to read]: I think the stealing fire/tech from the gods and getting punished was twofold. Humans crossing their boundry and getting punished.... and...
The Engineers stealing the DNA from the flying saucer people at the beginning, ('Cause that didn't look like the standard Engineer ship to me..) and it destroyed that engineer (was he the real Prometheus of the title?)... The other engineers possibly then spread this tech/allegorical fire as the bioweapon that it was.) My interpretation and I feel it explains the beginning part more comprehensively than Ive heard online. Only question is after that: WHo are the flying saucer lot? Those 'chariots of the gods' gods? We may see in the sequel...
What do you guys think of this possible explanation?
Hah!

[SPOILER - highlight to read]: That smooth flat ship didn't fit with the techno-organic look of the Engineers ships/tech. But then again, the beginning of the film would have taken place millions; most likely billions of years before though, so it's possible they were/are one and the same people and their tech just changed? But I do doubt that. I do wish they would have let us known at which period in time that Engineer seeded the Earth with his DNA.
I do believe that Engineer that sacrificed himself was supposed to represent Prometheus, in the sense he gave humanity life. You do have a good point with that other ship being a different race and in a sense punishing him/his people by making them seed a planet and spawn a new race based on their own, which in turn they loathed.
The Engineers (or at least giant humanoids) had been visiting Earth/Humanity for some time though and those pictures of that solar-system seem to have been as an invitation. So it's possible they were friendly towards humanity and then at some point (roughly two-thousand years as stated by the age of the corpses?) they decided to destroy humanity/life on Earth. This is exactly what the doctor left to find out.
Than again, it could be two factions of the same race? Friendly self-sacrifing Engineers that create life and mean mofo's that beat old men to death with the severed heads of their android servants. Too many questions, not enough direct answers.
Looks like we may have been onto something...
