Classic Nova had a very vanilla power-set; super speed, flight, durability, fast healing. Marv Wolfman said that he had intended for him to gradually discover his other powers over time, but the series was canceled. This is hinted at in the third to last issue...

Interestingly, Nova continued right on down the very path that Wolfman had originally intended, even though he lost his lawsuit against Marvel over the character rights.

Seriously, even "current" Nova would have problems against Rom. He's pretty durable (Stood up to Wolverines claws, and take attacks from Terrax and even Big G and keep fighting), and his energy neutralizer is the perfect weapon against energy manipulators, unless you're Big G and can neutralize his energy neutralizer..
