MS has really botched the communication in regards to this used game sale system. I'm just happy that it's a non factor for me, personally, as I refuse to buy used games on principal alone.
Frankly I'll be happy when all game transactions are done digitally in a decade and the whole thing will just be a non issue.
Do you need high-speed to authenticate newly bought Windows or Office? It depends on how they do it. We are speculating. I'm speculating that the host OS will authenticate the licenses for installed games. It does't require a high speed connection to do so. Your speculating that it will be through XBOX Live.
They are going to block port 80? Or block port 53? Don't think so. I don't know how the XBOX connects to the Internet at the Transport layer? It could use port 3047, which XBOX Live uses but who knows. But I don't see it being an issue. I don't think colleges block consoles from connecting to the Internet. Torrrent is a completely different issue. It's not legal.

I have no idea, to be quite honest. I would be surprised if it wasn't through XBL, though, since they try and push everyone to use that as much as possible anyway.
Colleges certainly do, though. I know of several in my area that do (and people who go to them). So it's a thing that can and does happen.
It also doesn't take into account situations like people who are on military bases and cannot always get reliable internet. My brother in law is stationed in Afghanistan right now. He can use his 360, but doesn't have internet.
Those kinds of situations may not be a large percentage of gamers, but they do exist, and it's really shitty that what MS is doing could potentially cut a lot of people off from gaming if they wanted the new system.
Also, technically, filesharing is not illegal. It's sharing copyrighted materials that is.
I agree about the military bases. That would really suck but I wouldn't be surprised if MS does something about that.
Realistically, in the next 5 to 10 years, how many people will not be connected to the web in one way or another. Your comparing our present situation we have today and thinking it could not change. Maybe colleges block consoles from accessing the Internet but doesn't mean they will continue to do so.
In the end, it's games that bring people to consoles. If MS has the games, people will buy the console no matter what they say this week. All the other features are for people who are not into games, and that population of people is a lot more than core gamers.

Basically, no fee to play used games or friends games. Needs to be online to authenticate the disc. If you trade, or lend to a friend, your install is deactivated and your friend is able to play it. Once you get it back, you reactivates on your console and your friend can't play it.
Basically, whatever 360 Live Arcade or other dlc you own, can be enjoyed until your console breaks down. In theory, you can transfer your Live profile to another console and transfer, but eventually MS WILL suspend Live services, and you'll be out of luck.
That about right?
This is why I still use my PS2, SNES, and NES. If they break, I'll replace them, and can still enjoy the games.... No doubt, in another 10-20 years, those consoles will be replaceable, just like the NES, or hell, an Atari 2600 is replaceable over 20 years later
Once this gen ends, it's really done for good, isn't it.

I'm assuming Live will not go down for at least 10 years.
So you can probably use your XBLA games 15 years from now (I'm assume you would replace your broken console and transferred the rights of the game to the new console).
EDIT: Without needing a new post. There is comment on Joystiq that is funny. This is not my though, just some guys on Joystiq.
Some fun facts I've learned about this so-called hardcore gaming community from the Xbox One reveal:
1) Everyone seems to have a piece of shit Internet connection that is constantly going out on them.
2) Everyone is apparently broke as hell and they buy most of their games used from eBay and Craigslist.
3) STEAM is the best thing in the world, even though you can't sell your used games and they require an Internet connection.
4) It's OK to have a webcam on your iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Laptop, PC, etc. But one on your Xbox will mean that the government will be watching you beat off every night.
5) Everyone beats off in front of their Xbox all day long.
6) Being able to take advantage of cloud computing means that your games will look like shit because your Internet connection is an unreliable 512kbps piece of garbage.
7) Having an HDMI input on the Xbox so you don't have to wait for your cable box to sync back up to the TV when you switch inputs is a bad thing and means Microsoft wants you to watch TV and not buy their games.
8) Having a console that turns your TV on automatically and boots up in 1 second when you say, "Xbox On" is bad. We don't know why, but we'll think of a reason why this is somehow the downfall of humanity.
9) Microsoft wants to siphon off all your money.
10) Microsoft wants to kill you in your sleep and harvest your organs.

I've never seen any gamestop take broken or defective items around here. (I'm in Boston.) They reject 'em here. And I know you're being biased and defending the thieves but my story is not bs. There's no reason for me to lie on here, Peachy Poo.

"Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games"
That's where they should have started out the gate, and saved much of this hassle. They should have had all the details ready to go at the reveal; as it is people are still waiting for the details and bad press will continue.

Also, it didn't help that gamers are a fickle bunch and rumours about always online and used games being thrown out circled for months. So when the reveal happened and it wasn't gamer centric and made no mention about those two items, it blew up like crazy.
But for the past couple of days, I have been reading the comments and people are starting to talk about the actual consoles features and not just crazy, "MS is done, this machine is ****ing garbage".
It also didn't help that game journalists are very bad at their job as journalists. They are glorified bloggers so when they were writing their headlines, the whole idea that a lot of this information was from valued sources and not MS themselves.
I wish I had a good reason to get any one of the new next gen consoles besides the novelty of it, but I just don't, and it's because what I have is far more superior technologically speaking. Not to sound pompous but spec-wise my machine destroys the new next gen consoles. Anything these new consoles can do my machine can do better. And that's with what I have now. One day after the announcement of the "One", the gtx 780 graphics card was announced. A card many times more powerful than what's inside these new next gen consoles. Hell the lowest card "the 740" will blow away the new gen gpu's and cost less.
So. I currently have no plans to get either. And this is the first time I've planned not to get a next gen console upon it's launch.
The only thing that may draw me are the exclusives like god of war and tekken, madden etc. or that my friends play cod fiends on console and have been beggin me to get on since i'm real good on pc. And if the systems get 4k support. At 60fps. At least.

hdtv's are basically low def by PC standards. (I'm not a PC elitist, and don't even have a proper gaming rig, but just saying.)

I could never hook a gaming pc up to a tv. i'm the sort of person that sits hunched over a desk, micro-managing units and such. I couldn't relax and do that.
