We don't know how the machine worked and if it went through every encounter with Superman. There are some problems with the plot in Man of Steel, but that is most certainly not one of them.
You don't need them to flat out say it its self-explanatory. They use the device to look through her memories so obviously they brought her on for that. Plus shes a hostage in case Kal tries something.
I'm not comparing the films either. I'm saying that EVERY incarnation of the character is just as or more 'useless' as she was in this movie. She's a reporter. Whats she gonna ****in' do? (please log in to view the image)
I don't understand why you call her useless. Because she can't fight a Kryptonian? No shit.
Watching MOS a 2nd time lastnight...it was slightly more enjoyable knowing what flaws to expect.
One aspect I paid more attention to was the amount of collateral damage Superman is responsible for. You may not see innocents killed but you can easily imagine the body count.
In battle, Superman is angry & doesn't seem to care about the consequences of his actions.
Then asking to be trusted, on his terms is truly stretching having faith in him.
Watching the Smallville fight again I realized the Supes royally ****ed up there. Dude flies through a power plant(awesome at first) and then a gas station on top of crashing through Ihop and showing no love for railroads. Still it was pretty cool to see super-powered people having super powered fights.
Also it might be just my perception of it but when compared to the Kryptonians, the Asgardians in Thor 2 were ****ing chumps. Heck even Jor-el kicked more ass than the Asgardian army in its entirety.
No Idris Elba took down a giant ship with knives . Also I was kind of expecting him to do something more uber like cutting it in half...but that's just me being silly.
May be the "norm" in comics but collateral damage & lives lost BECAUSE of Superman's actions ISN'T the norm.
Whether it's movie, tv, cartoon or comic version, Supes is always thinking 3 steps ahead planning where to take the battle to...AVOIDING human lives lost.
Well yeah...bad writing & a total disregard to the Superman mythos.
I mean they're introducing Batman in the sequel...how the hell is Bats supposed to ignore the wanton destruction of Metropolis & be allies at the end of the sequel?
We barely saw the Warriors 3 and Lady Sif fight, when they did they were easily beating their enemies. Odin didn't fight at all. Not sure what bringing them up has to do with your earlier point.
My point was that Odin and the Cameo guild didn't do anything despite being invaded even though Odin's pops beat these guys when they were at full strength. Why were these guys along with the rest of Asgard such chumps.
Gender: Male Location: 4th Street Underpass, Manhattan
Actually, I recall Superman giving Darkseid a badass World Of Cardboard speech before punching him through at least 2 skyscrapers IIRC, causing them to collapse. I find it hard to believe nobody died there.
I did find the Smallville fight hilarious when he told everybody to get inside, they all get inside and gather by the windows, and moments later Superman tosses a tank (IIRC) which causes a massive backblast into all of the windows, which must have killed somebody.
It's just stupid that Snyder put too much emphasis into a character wanting to be accepted by humanity only to have the same character show total disregard to the outcome of his actions.

I just find it jarring that Snyder didn't stick in more scenes of people clearing out of the battlezone before Supes and Co. enter. Even at the end of Thor, they cleared out the town before Thor threw down with The Destroyer. I think it says a lot about the though process making the film that most of Superman's showings of power are in fights. Besides the oil platform at the beginning, IDK if I can recall him using his powers to directly save anybody from danger. Even in the Avengers, Whedon took five minutes to include a scene where the heroes rescue citizens from a bus and other locales. Superman seemed more interested in punishing the guilty than protecting the innocent, which completely goes against the ideology of Superman.
I thought this movie was enjoyable as a standalone alien invasion film. Barely passable as a Superman film however.
Sadly there really was no "wow factor". A lot of long distance shots of Superman flying that had no impact.
I found it mildly funny when Supes races back to see if his mother's ok after the farm was destroyed...we see him outside, walking up to the door shouting, "MOM?" instead of flying in to see if she's alive.
