I think they're fine characters, don't get me wrong. I just don't want to be playing as everyone's children in the next game. I want my Johnny Cages and my Liu Kangs and either of the Sub Zeros.
So I didn't buy and haven't played MKX. Now that's it is months old, how does it stack up against MK9?

Story is not as good imo there are no stage fatalities otherwise it's better every other way.
Better gameplay
Stage interactions
Brutalities are fun
Variations are great
Faction kills
Faction is a cool add (faction boss battles, war towers ,daily challenges)
Living towers are nice giving you extras like new card items(like in Injustice)
For those that have played it, I have two questions:
1. What do you think of the whole "each character has three styles" system? Would you have preferred a more comprehensive single style for each, or do you like having the choice?
2. Is it me or was Kotal Kahn a tad... I dunno, weak, considering who he's supposed to be? Shinnok might be the big bad in the game, but he's barely in it.
Same here. The new heroes are pretty cookie cutter all around except maybe Takeda. I say him due to the amount of development he got in the comics.
Pretty much, except roster. Definitely prefer a number of the now deceased MK1-3 characters over like the new heroes. The other new characters like Kotal and most of his crew were still cool though.
And then there's the DLC cast, which MKX went too overboard with guests compared to MK9, even though I liked most of them minus Leatherface. I guess it may come down to whether you prefer Tremor or Rain out of the most anticipated MK9 and X DLC's, though I definitely wouldn't of minded either if MKX had given us a completely new MK character as DLC, like 9 did with Skarlet. Just anything over Warner Bros continuing to make MK into a sellout to promote the next slasher or whatever that'll probably suck like the last Texas Chainsaw.
As far as story, if you count the comics I would say MKX's is better than MK9's even, but without the comics MK9 beats it there easily.
On that note...
Kotal was much better written and vastly more powerful in the comics. Easily solo'ed a number of familiar kombatants along with slaying the likes of Goro's father the king.
As for the variation system, I guess I prefer it over going without it at this point, and it definitely fixes the kind of balancing issues MK9 and Injustice had. Assuming variations will be in Injustice 2, it'll be my most anticipated feature for that game.
I believe you can still easily find all the chapters of the MKX comics on youtube, usually in good quality, though I'm sure they're as accessible in other places easily enough too. Overall, the comics just richly expand the lore of the story in ways the chapter-based campaigns of the games never could.
Well it prevented characters from having too many specials in one moveset, which some had more than others in the previous games, know what I mean?
That's how I felt when realizing Raiden's teleport was only in one of the variations. Won't deny that I've questioned some aspects of the whole system, but overall I think it's kinda done more good than bad for the characters and balancing... even if it made some like Sonya more nerfed than it should've in this game.
Kotal was a tank in the comics. He 1 shot Rain ,humiliated Goro ,killed the king of Shokan and did pretty well against amped Reiko while his blood dagger was stolen from him.
The comics do have some really meh fights though you will see what im talking about...
Unfortunetly he was kinda meh in the game but which baddie isnt?
Quan chi got his nut cracked by Sonya ,Ermac got his ass kicked by everybody while he should be able to beat most of the characters.
I think the variations system is great.
@Ridley
Yeah I agree with everything you said.
The comics definetly make the story better.
I was sad about Rain but Tremor is just as good for me and Predator was one of the best choices they could ever make.(Been a huge fan eversince I was like 7.)But yeah more MK characters would have been the best choice.
I didn't mind the humiliating beatings Quan Chi got since I was tired of all the control he had over the revenants and stuff for awhile after MK9. The fact it also hurt the user quanchi was a bonus. =p Agree on Ermac though. Was sad to see that he was still a jobber, especially in Jacqui's chapter; makes me wish he still eventually joins the good guys again like in Deception, and Ermy's arcade ending was just insult to injury for him, much as I liked the Shang Tsung cameo...
It should be pointed out that it wasn't NRS who developed the PC version, it was High Voltage Studios. Not only did they screw that up a major amount, they did so to the point they actually removed any mention of the PC release on their official pages. **** High Voltage.
Yeah, so the majority of the blame lies more with WB than NR, even if they do shoulder a little of the blame.
Look at Arkham Knight. Same thing. Shoved the game out to another studio for the PC release, ****ed it up.
Now look at two other WB games, Shadow of Mordor and Mad Max. Both run beautifully on PC, and a large part of that is because the same devs worked on all of the versions.
Back on KP2 news, Cyber Sub-Zero an extra variation for Tri-Borg?! Might as well have called it Quad-Borg then. Glad this thing's coming out first though regardless.
