Very poor showings for South America so far.

It would be awesome if this was the year for North American ascendancy.

That Korean goal-kick just now went up and over the goal by at least 30 feet.

A draw? Interesting.

Algeria's probably happy because both Russia and Korea are now in reach. Belgium is probably also happy because it's much less likely that Russia can steal the group's top spot from them. Korea is happy(ish) because it was probably expecting a trouncing. Now if they beat Algeria and draw Belgium they have a shot of advancing.

Only Russia is sad.

That match was meh until the last twenty minutes. Business really picked up at that point, imo.

You know, many players from the 98 France football team were from algerian ascendence, so they feel they deserve better football overall.

It doesn't help that France poached most of them, and still does.

For their reputation as a nation of manly men, Australia was acting like a bunch of floppy bitches in this game.

Couldn't believe the Van Persie card.

I'm glad that the Netherlands won, but I'd have preferred a victory by 2.

Looking at the FIFA statistics so far, there have been an average of 2.9 goals per game and an average of 3 yellow cards per game. Pretty good.

2.9 goals per game...when 2 of the 18 games so far have been 0-0 draws. If you ignored those two outliers, the average would probably be closer to 4 goals a game.

The way the teams have been playing, Australia might draw against Spain.

I actually feel bad for Spain now.

Not too bad, mind you.

I thought that the Australians did very well at the start of the match, but as time went on, and the Dutch woke up, we did see the gap in class present itself more. That said, Holland really didn't deserve the win.

Spain, Spain... Spain.

Going home early, and tbh, they deserve to be. Horrific performances from players that should know far better.

Xabi Alonso, who has always been a favourite of mine, Xavi himself, and the often-vaunted Diego Costa were all poor. They didn't bring Negredo or Navas, which were mistakes.

Then there's Casillas. If there's one player that deserves most of the stick, it's him. He was at fault for several of the goals they conceded in both games, even more than the other players in the team. What Maradona said about him is true, and I hope he learns a big lesson after today.

How can you say that Holland didn't deserve the win?

On reflection, it's more me thinking that Australia deserved something from that game, than me saying Holland were shit. Though they weren't exactly on fire in that first half, and they were outmuscled pretty successfully for a time, I thought.

Australia played well, sure, but their second goal was basically a gift from heaven (I don't think an accidental handball should be grounds for a penalty kick--sorry, it's just not comparable to a malicious foul or an intentional handball), so but for the placement of that one guy's hand we could have seen a 3-1 victory for Netherlands.

I am going for the Aussies against Spain though. Complete the humbling.

Oh, I don't think it was a penalty either. I just thought Australia played a lot better than I had expected them to.

lol aye, send Spain packing.
