Doing simple math, if the films budget was $144 m, with an additional $100 m in advertising (although these numbers were probably understated by Sony to save face), that would bring the total cost of the film to $244 m, we'll say $250 m to be safe. Now since theater chains take half of the box office, that means that in order for the studio to make its money back, it would have to gross at least $500 m, which is what Feig originally stated, as if we went with his lower estimate of $300 m, that would mean that the studio would only make back $150 mil, less than half of the film's total production and marketing costs.
Now that this movie has flopped in Japan however, it will be finishing it's worldwide theater run with probably between $210-$215 m. Since the theater takes half, that means Sony will only be getting back at most $107 mil from theater gross, and let's not even act like it has legs on DVD, but we'll throw in $10 million in DVD sales, bringing Sony's money back from the film to $117 million (we'll round to about $120).
That means that out of a $250 million investment, Sony only made back $120, meaning they lost $130 million. (And again, this is being generous considering the rumours that advertising was actually $150 million, meaning Sony actually lost $180 million dollars!!!)
$130-180 million loss for Sony. Jesus Christ. Are you happy with yourself Amy Pascal? You failed your company horribly with this. You and Feig should be blacklisted from Hollywood forever (and take Tom Rothman and Avi Arad with you)

IDGAF about the film. I do give a phuck when a bytchy studio executive forces the artists who created the product she wishes to exploit off the project even though said artist was waiting years, and then hiring a sometimes-funny director who proceeded to call everyone who criticized the film misogynist basement dwellers and even trying to make seeing the film a political duty.
For the film's quality itself I'm indifferent. Towards all the BS during production and marketing, I am taking great schadenfreudian pleasure in seeing this movie karmically tank.
Well you see if the plan was to bring back the franchise and this shitty film nuked that possibility..you see where I'm going bro?

For most fans of the originals, comparing this to Batman & Robin would actually be generous tbh. B&R was considerably a fun film too, albeit a dumb kiddy kind of fun. And hey, at least Schumacher formally apologized for making the film, which is much more than can be said for Feig over this.

I mean like I said..this was SUPPOSED to be the beginning of a new franchise. They even came out and said it was "very likely" a sequel would happen and of course jumped the gun there.
So not only did they f*ck it up and just leave everyone with a foul taste in their mouth regarding Ghostbusters..but we had to endure people trying to whine and blame all this negativity on..omg girls! At least if they made a shitty remake with men we'd be more free to discuss it without anyone going "woah woah woah guys" because a gimmicky gender swap was attempted.

Pascal and Feig are the ones who brought politics into it. No reason for Amy Pascal to fire Ivan Reitman and hire known misandrist Paul Feig other than her own selfish feminist agenda.
It got sunk because it sucked and not a lot of people saw it. It wasn't politics that kept a majority of people from seeing it.
I mean I know a lot of people want to think it went down this way, but this wasn't most people going "damn it has girls so no thanks". Nor was it really "damn people whined about girls being in this so no thanks".

It flopped for the reasons Fan4stic did: From the moment it was announced, it was clear that it was a soulless cash grab, the fans got pissed, and the filmmakers (instead of maintaining composure to protect their investment) repeatedly demeaned them for it, only to then try (and fail) lure those same fans to pay to see it.
The lesson is simple: Dont insult the customers you are marketing your product to, or else your product won't sell.

The amount of stupidity and lack of ethics that went into making this film, and it's subsequent massive failure, is far more interesting than the film itself. This film will be looked on and talked about in film classes for years to come as the textbook definition of "how NOT to reboot and market a potential franchise".
Yep, and anyone who wants to take the time to go look at the early pages of this thread will see I said that if this movie tanked people would blame it on the "controversy". It's one of these overblown things, like gamer-gate.

Wow, so I just found that, despite forcing Ivan Reitman off the surely-successful Ghostbusters reboot he was planning to subject audiences to Paul Feig's misandrist flopfest and despite promoting the film as a pro-female pre-gender/race equality achievement, Amy Pascal is actually a misogynist and racist.
The Sony hacks proved two things about Pascal, one that she is a racist (saying Obama would like Django) and even worse, that she is a misogynist who purposefully paid actresses less than actors and kept actresses ignorant of the wage gap. After the hack and Pascal's demotion, Charlize Theron used this knowledge to get proper payment for the Huntsman movie.
So yeah, despite being a film supposedly supporting women and egalitarianism, the mastermind behind the whole thing is actually a racist misogynist elitist. I wonder if Paul Feig, Mellisa McCarthy, or Leslie Jones bothered to consider they were working with a misogynist racist. Makes them look pretty damn stupid....
