-Extremely reminiscent of Se7en. Dark, brooding, and unnerving.
-Paul Dano f*cking KILLED IT as Riddler. The perfect mix of the Zodiac killer and John Doe from Se7en. Looney Tuney AF.
-The detective aspect of the film was very well done and intelligent. It was totally not predictable or typical.
-The run time. Say what you will about a nearly three hour long film, but this is storytelling, y’all. It might drag at a few points, but the story is so much more satisfying with longer scenes and time.
-Lotsa subtle references to last Batman movies and tv. Things that make you point and go “Ooh!”
Cons:
-Pattinson did surprisingly well as Batman, but I totally didn’t get him as Bruce Wayne. Wayne wasn’t portrayed as a company savvy playboy philanthropist, rather just a billionaire who inherited a fortune and was the target of campaigners. Wayne wasn’t an onscreen presence.
-I vehemently opine that this film should have been rated R. The sheer tone of this film warrants an R rating, in my opinion.
-Zoë Kravitz is beautiful and I’d wear gear like a surgical mask, but I didn’t get her much as Catwoman. Not a bad performance but left with some holes.
Overall, I’m impressed and fulfilled. Is it better than the Dark Knight? I’m not even gonna make a comparison because both films are so wildly different.
I really enjoyed this, I'd put it up there with Nolan's first two films in quality/entertainment value, but taking Batman from a different viewpoint.
I was happy to see the detective aspect of Batman being at the forefront of his persona and most aspects of the film flowed well around that. This is a crime thriller first and a superhero flick second.
I agree with Impediment on Pattison, he did a really good job as a young Batman finding his stride, but his Bruce Wayne was just off somewhat. Bring of the sequel, please.
edit: While I didn't mind the 3hr runtime, imo, they could have cut 20-30 mins and still had a solid film.
I dunno why everyone is slagging on Bruce Wayne. The kids gotta have character development guys I mean the film made it pretty clear that he's got a lot of room to grow into the guy we all know from the comics and Batmans arc through the film makes it quite obvious that we will see development towards that territory as this series develops. Just give it the time it deserves. Wayne was a shadow because the man wanted him to be! he doesn't care about Bruce Waynes facade at this point but by the end with him changing from a vengeance outlook to that of a hero he will start to become more whole
anyways this movie was a 9.5/10 for me; the only thing ill say that I didn't care for was the whole Joker thing. If he's in Arkham already then Bats would've had to have dealt with him already no? And if thats the case then the city should be so shook by Riddler should they? Im sure it'll be fleshed later but a small nitpick for me.
This music in this was ridiculously amazing, legit one of the best scores I’ve ever heard. John Turturro was amazing too, he embodied Carmine Falcone perfectly. My only issue with any of the performances was I felt like Colin Farrell went a bit full retard a few times. There were a few scenes where I expected him to start yelling random Italian American non-sequiturs like DeNiro in Raging Bull.

Pattinson is a good actor overall, he's impressed me in several movies now. The Lighthouse, The King, The Rover, Water for Elephants, The Devil All the Time. All good performances.
So this was a film of extremes. Gotham has never looked grittier and atmospheric and the tone was absolutely perfect in that regards. I liked the Rorschach style narrations at the start and end. I thought Paul Dano, Colin Farrell and John Turturro was all excellent in their antagonistic roles. Pattinson made an excellent Batmsn and Zoe Kravitz just oozed sexuality in it. All great. Jeffrey Wright decent enough although he's much more talented than this portrayal showed. Great that they had some minor actors that I really like such as Alex Ferns who was the Head miner in Chernobyl as well as Con O'Neill who was also in Chernobyl.
As for the bad, the supposed "detective" aspects were embarrassing. "He lies still" wasn't exactly genius level stuff so I have no idea why no one else figured it out and needed Dur Greatust durtectib to figure that retarded shit out. The finale essentially had Batman fighting a bunch of online radicalised incels. The fight choreography sometimes suffered from the same problems as the Nolan and Snyder films...like kicks quite clearly nowhere near connecting. It also felt extremely anticlimactic.
A decent start though. They definitely should've left out The Joker part at the end and tried to tie the next one into Phoenix Joker because stylistically the 2 would fit perfectly.
