I caught this again at the cheap theater and still rather enjoyed it. It really does feel straight lifted from the comic. I was able to download the main songs used in the film and make myself a little homemade soundtrack out of it. I even put them in order of their appearance in the film. See attached...
The track list:
1. Los Lobos - Cumbia Raza
2. Unprotected Innocence - Rock Me Like a Hurricane
3. Rosalia - Malamente
4. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat The Devil's Tattoo
5. X Ambassadors - The Devil You Know
6. Muse - Psycho
7. Royal Blood - Figure It Out
8. Black Pistol Fire - Suffocation Blues
9. Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare
10. Cilla Black - Anyone Who Had A Heart
11. Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart
There is an official soundtrack, but it's the film score, which is awesome, too. It's a shame it's buried a lot behind most of the sound effects and such in the film.
Honestly whatever problems they had behind the scenes it didn't seem to effect the final product that much. There are perhaps some signs that there were too many cooks in the kitchen (so to speak) and that may be why the film seems a little bloated with so many plot elements, but at the same time it keeps the movie fast-paced. And like Harbour says, it's a different flavor and is a lot of fun in a different sort of way than other comic films. As movie lovers we should welcome some different flavors. I sure as hell don't want every movie to feel like a Marvel film even though I like some Marvel films a lot.
It's a difficult one to reduce to a number/rating score. Go check some of my earlier reactions for elaboration. In short: I'd say if you enjoy trashy B-movie stuff like Sin City and old horror like Evil Dead this is a must-see. Because it also has elements of action/adventure that we're used to from comic films. If you like that kind of stuff it's a good 8-9/10. If not, then well, just look at the RT score.
It's trashy fun lifted pretty much straight from the comic. Fun dark imagery and violence.
Unfortunately most of the moronic movie-going public have no imagination and completely held the whole del Toro situation against this film for some reason.
I bought the 4k Blu-ray for this and the special features are pretty good, but I wanted to hear from the director. You don't hear anything from the director. I don't know if he's intentionally camera shy or what, but it does seem that the producer was stealing the spotlight. That may relate to some of the issues that happened behinds the scenes.
Yup got it too & was a bit disappointed of no commentary.
Loved the costume & prop making though.
Also liked the deleted scene of Nimue where she was more a victim than villain. I liked the extra dialogue of how she was willing to surrender in order for man to stop blaming her people for everything that went wrong in the world...before Arthur betrayed the truce.
Yeah Nimue had a great speech about how every time there was a drought or famine or pestilence, men would blame Nimue's people (elves, fairies, goblins) & then hunt them down & kill them.
The deleted scene had Nimue willingly surrendering her crown (power) to Arthur to bring a truce.
I guess they wanted to distance the story away from a doomed love story of HellBoy & Nimue by focussing on her being a villain bent on destruction & not injustice.
