And why are we immediately assuming Ares can't break Apoc's shields? I don't recall his shields getting hit with the same force that Ares can generate. But my memory might just be shoddy.
Apocalypse withstood Storms lightning, Cyclops Beams, Magneto throwing untold tons of rubble, and a telepathic assault from Jean and Professor X. Ares's swords are no stronger Than Magnetos rubble they're just randomly strewn metal swords, they didn't do anything amazing in terms of damage and his telekinesis at best was lifting small chunks of land. His lightning as well is vastly inferior to Apocalypse destroying an entire city and it took him time to gather it up

Except that none of those mutants had as much strength as Ares does. Who's to say he can't just start pounding on the shields with his barehands and eventually break it down?
Combined they have more power in total than Ares who didn't generate any power greater than even Magneto. And Apocalypse was withstanding all of their combined assault and would've survived as it took Phoenix's power to destroy him. What strength feats does Ares have that suggest he can break his shields and how are his physical blows more powerful than Phoenix's power?

Level of Ares? all told, he wasn't really all that powerful.
