Sex trafficking survivor slams Britt for inaccurate story in SOTU response

During the Republican response to the State of the Union on Thursday, Britt told a graphic story involving sex trafficking and rape to criticize Biden’s immigration policies.

“When I first took office, I did something different. I traveled to the Del Rio sector of Texas, where I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me. She had been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at age 12,” Britt said. “President Biden’s border crisis is a disgrace. It’s despicable. And it’s almost entirely preventable.” -snip

An independent reporter later revealed in a TikTok video that the woman in question was Romero, who met with Britt and two other senators in January 2023. The story Britt was referencing occurred during President George W. Bush’s administration, when Biden was still a senator. Romero testified before Congress back in 2015 about her experiences a decade earlier with sex trafficking in Mexico. -snip

Pretty standard Republican dishonestly tactics.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...n-of-harassment

In one of the most serious alleged incidents described in the documents, two Unrwa staff in a marked UN vehicle were stopped by soldiers at a temporary checkpoint in February 2024 as they tried to leave a Palestinian village near Bethlehem.

quote:
The soldiers, who “forcefully” removed the keys and “forced the staff to get out … at gunpoint”, then searched the vehicle and mocked the staff “making reference to the staff belonging to Hamas”. The staff were then instructed to kneel down, were blindfolded, handcuffed with plastic cable-ties and beaten before a senior officer intervened, the documents allege.

Insane if true. I usually give the IDF the benefit of the doubt in the sense I believe the accusations against them are often overblown, but here they act like glorified thugs.

It makes you question everything, including the accusations of anti-semetism from the usual sources and the insistence from Netanyahu that they are doing everything in their power to follow international and humanitarian concerns.

DeSantis Signs GOP Bill Rolling Back Child Labor Laws

A bill that would remove all work hour restrictions on teenagers—including the prohibition on overnight shifts on school nights—received lawmakers' approval at its first committee stop over Democrats' objections. Republican Representative Linda Chaney's bill (HB 49) went before the House Regulatory Reform & Economic Development Subcommittee. It proposes to roll back decades of state restrictions on child labor.

Kids want to work, she said, noting that teen workforce participation has dropped precipitously since Florida adopted its current guidelines in the 1930s. "This bill gets government out of their way to choose the path that is best for them," she said.

"There's going to be so much time for them to be an adult," said Democratic Representative Susan Valdés. She invoked a familiar theme that Republicans sounded as laws were passed restricting LGBTQ materials in schools. "Let kids be children."

Florida, where teens cannot choose to attend an all ages drag show with their parents, but can choose to work overnight shifts before school.

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill Friday authorizing teenagers to work more than 30 hours per week with their parent's approval.

The governor's signing of HB 49, which had garnered criticism from workers' advocacy groups, came without fanfare. In fact, his office announced the approval in a press release along with 24 other bills the governor signed Friday afternoon.

Under the law going into effect in a few months, employers could schedule teenagers to work for more than six days at a time. Homeschooled teenagers and those who attend virtual schools can now work without any of the limitations the state places on minors.

Look who's suddenly concerned about minors.

Go peddle your nonsense on Reddit.

It's so businesses can take advantage of teen workers. Ron DeSantis is looking out for his rich business buddies.

Isn't DeSantis best friends with two convicted child molesters? or is that another prominent Republican? Hard to keep track with so many.

DeSantis wanted to appear tough on immigration to support his presidential amibitions, so the Florida Republican legislature rubber-stamped his anti-immigrant policies, causing migrant labor to leave the state. Now, they are scrambling to replace those workers with low-cost child labor to keep multiple industries in the state from imploding, so they do not face the wrath of wealthy Republican donors and voters.

The bill was supported by DeSantis megadonor and packaging and shipping magnate Dick Uihlein. Not only does it allow teenagers to work in previously forbidden construction jobs, but it also allows developers to raze coastal and historic buildings and replace them with structuress as large as zoning permits.

What, this?

quote:
“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews,” Carano wrote online at the time, “How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Maybe not the best analogy, but it was still insightful. She's right, hatred is irrational, Republicans are a legitimate party with legitimate points that may be disagreed with, debated, contested, but hated is simply an act of dehumanizing.

GOP Candidate Charged with Strangling Teen

A Republican candidate for state House of Representatives in Northern Kentucky was arrested and booked for strangulation Monday night. According to Kenton County Jail records, Brian Ormes was arrested by a Fort Wright police officer and booked into Kenton County Jail at 11:02 p.m. Monday on three charges: first-degree strangulation, menacing, and fourth-degree assault with no visible injury.

Ormes, 53, is a candidate for House District 67, located in Campbell County, and encompasses most of the city of Newport. The seat is currently held by House Democratic Whip Rachel Roberts, who is not seeking re-election. According to a bond decision from Kenton County District Court, Ormes is required to refrain from contacting the victim and to "stay out of all Walmarts" as conditions of his release.

According to a Fort Wright police report, three minors were playing with a ball by the bike aisle at the Valley Plaza Walmart. The ball almost hit Ormes' son, and the minors told police Ormes became angry and started following them around the store.

A police officer said in the report he saw security video footage of Ormes confronting a 17-year-old and punching him in the back of the head. Ormes then pushed the teen against a shelf and put his hand around the teen's neck.

Ormes was released from the Kenton County Detention Center on a $2,500 cash bond Tuesday. He is scheduled to be back in court April 16th.

Disney Reveals ‘Final Straw’ for Firing ‘The Mandalorian’s’ Gina Carano

I liked Gina in that role, but she's little more than a very good looking moron, she had chance, after chance, after chance to stop being an edge lord but she kept pushing. Being edgy was worth more than Disney cash.

As far as her "hatred" quote, she's obviously wrong as you can definitely hate someone for their political views if those views are deplorable. eg The very Nazi party she used as an example was a political party with views and beliefs that deserve nothing short of repulsion.

Republicans love abusing the underage.

Republican Ex-Pat Jailed as Spy in Russia

The Moscow Times: "Russia Building Village for Conservative U.S. Ex-Patriots"

Russian authorities will launch construction of a village outside Moscow for conservative-minded Americans and Canadians next year, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported Thursday. Russia has for years positioned itself as a bastion of "traditional" values in contrast with Western liberalism as its relations with the West have deteriorated over its 2014 annexation of Crimea and 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Timur Beslanguro, a migration lawyer at Moscow's VISTA Foreign Business Support, claimed that "around 200 families" wish to emigrate to Russia for "ideological reasons."

"The reason is propaganda of radical values: Today they have 70 genders, and who knows what will come next," Beslangurov said, echoing President Vladimir Putin's frequently deployed grievances against Western countries' comparative gender freedom.

The tragicomic tale of a down-on-his-luck Texan who reinvented himself as a renegade war hero in a fake Russian republic took an unexpected turn this week when he was abducted by Russian troops after being accused of being a CIA spy. Russell Bentley, also known as "Texas," is perhaps the last person one would expect to have pulled off cunning spycraft for the nearly 10 years he has been living among Russian fighters in Ukraine's occupied Donetsk region.

A Dallas native with a conviction on drug charges back home, Bentley briefly seized international headlines in 2014 when he was spotted in a cowboy hat with Russian fighters, and spewing Kremlin propaganda about "Nazis" in Ukraine. He obtained Russian citizenship in 2020 after remodeling himself as a combat-vet-turned-"journalist" for Kremlin-controlled media.
