Its not an opinion that Omni-Man is not durable enough to survive an impact with a planet. Superman would not need Space Racer's gun to go through Viltrum, because he is powerful enough to do it under his own power.

No, Thaddeus said that they could die, called for more help than was necessary, and then got oneshotted by Thragg (who then had much more difficulty putting down Mark and Nolan). Given all of this context information, I'd say that it's more than safe to say that Thaddeus was either overestimating the difficulty involved or was trying to stack the deck in his favor. The latter sentiment is actually backed up by Space Racers testimony.
