A teacher and youth ministry leader admitted to possessing child sexual abuse material in federal court today and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for his crime.

Christian Baumgarth, 27, of Atlanta and formerly of Macon, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography before U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell on July 8th.

Baumgarth faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison to be followed by up to a lifetime of supervised release and a maximum $250,000 fine.

In addition, he will have to register as a sex offender upon release from prison. Baumgarth was taken into custody pending sentencing after entering his guilty plea.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 9th. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents and statements referenced in court, federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations were investigating people using encrypted applications to distribute CSAM during the summer of 2023.

Baumgarth was identified; at the time, he was a teacher and a coach at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, a position he held from 2018–2023.

Additionally, he was a small group leader in the student ministry at Northway Church in Macon from 2019–2023.

On August 1st 2023, agents executed a federal search warrant at Baumgarth's residence in Macon, seizing numerous electronic devices.

Agents notified FPD about the execution of the search warrant, and Baumgarth's employment was terminated.

Two of Baumgarth's iPhones were forensically examined and found to contain 20 images and 13 videos of CSAM, including some that depicted the sexual abuse or exploitation of an infant or toddler. Baumgarth was interviewed by law enforcement and admitted to the conduct.

Sweet committed various acts of sexual contact and sexual assault on multiple occasions over the course of several years when the child was between the ages of 13 and 18 at locations in River Edge, Paramus, and Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Sweet is pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in River Edge. He was ordained and installed in 1997, according to the church website. A woman who answered the phone at the church Friday said there was currently no one available to comment on the arrest or charges.

Sweet is charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, 10 counts of second-degree sexual assault, three counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual contact, and three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.

A minister was arraigned Monday afternoon in Lenawee district court on two criminal sexual conduct charges following his arrest Saturday.

The second-degree felony charges against Michael Ronald Goble filed in 2A District Court specify victims younger than age 13 and that the specific offenses occurred in November of 2021, court records show.

But a statement from Adrian police said more charges are likely forthcoming, with potential locations of significance including the Maurice Spears Juvenile Campus, Church of the Good Shepherd, and Mr. Goble's home.

Police indicate there are more victims.

A New Orleans-area Catholic priest who was dismissed as pastor from St. Anthony of Padua in Luling last year has been arrested and charged with illegally possessing child abuse imagery depicting unclothed children. Anthony Odiong was arrested Tuesday as he was leaving his home in Ave Maria, Florida.

According to sworn statements in support of the arrest warrant, police said they discovered the illicit pictures while investigating complaints from at least four women that made officers aware Odiong, 55, could be "a potential serial sexual assault suspect."

He was able to build a loyal following in large part by claiming he had a special understanding with the Virgin Mary through prayer. The charismatic clergyman would hold so-called healing masses after which some parishioners reported recovering from major medical ailments.

A pastor of a Brunswick County church faces multiple counts in a child sexual offense case.

On July 8th, Jonathan Ballard, pastor of Straightway Ministries Wilmington and Church of the Living God in Leland and Whiteville, was indicted with 12 counts of taking indecent liberties with children, six counts of statutory sex offense, and one count of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to a first appearance in New Hanover County Court Friday morning.

Four victims, including one who has since deceased, have come forward, Jason Smith, assistant district attorney representing the state in the case at Friday's first appearance, said. The abuse occurred between 1995 and 2019 across multiple counties.

Ballard was arrested on similar charges in 2004.
