Elves and their many idiosyncrasies....

OK. Here's my skeeze. Elves are immortal, but I just read, not all elves are immortal, which would make sense because at the Hornburg they went out like some little elvish marks. So then my question, my inquiry, my...query is; how did these elves loose their immortality and why?

They didn't. Elves are immortal in that they do not age and die like humans (despite Tolkien giving them a theoretical lifespan), nor are they affected by disease and such. But they can still die- either by losing the will to live, by accident, or by violence.

elves can die of a broken heart (because it is too much grieving)
they can die in battle
and there is one other thing that I dont really get, In the appendix in ROTK it says that Arwen died because all she had gained was lost, so I was assuming that if all that an elf had gained was lost then it would die

Well, she died of sadness... Of longing for what was lost, longing for things she once had. She lost the will to live, which is the same reason why they die from grief. If you're sad and are missing someone that died, you may lose the will to live. In that way an Elf can die, and in that way Arwen died.

Wellllllllllllllll there are several types of elves.....if u read the Appendices at the end of LOTR u'll see that there are the high-elves , and half-elves

it just so happens that Elrond is a half elf, but he and his brother Elros( i think thats his name), Were Given the choise to be either immortal or mortal, and this choise is also available to Elrond's children. Arwen chose to live a mortal life
note that this mortal life is much LONGER than regular inhabitants of middle earth.

But all elves can be killed. If they are grieviously harmed then they can go to valinor to live out ethernity. This was seen with Celebrian,( Arwen's mother, also the daughter of Galadriel)....she was captured and trotured but in the end departed to Valinor.

But they can allll be either hurt, or killed in some form or the other
