He first survived as sort of 'ghost' but he didn't have a body, so when the ring was destroyed finally his soul was destroyed too.

no, i dont beleive he died. I think it says something like after the ring was destroyed saurons essence became a shadow of malice never able to take form again. Sauron is supposed to return in the final great battle along with morgoth.

well i beleive it mentions it in the silmarillion but i guess at the end of all time or something like that morgoth is going to return from the outer darkness along with all his servents and the valar will wage one final battle with him where he will be uterly defeated. Here is what i found on a website -
"The prophesied final battle between the forces of light and darkess, called the Last Battle, in which Morgoth will return and suffer his final and ultimate defeat." - dagor dagorath

dunno aboot the apocalyptic stuff, but turin is right when he sed after the destruction o the ring, saurons spirit would diminish to a minor evil impotent thing that would hide in shadows and gnaw on itself. the other option woulda been if hed goten a hold o the ring, he woulda grown to immense power over the whole land. says so in the books somewhere

Silmarillion talks of the War of the Ring as well, so it is not ALL prequel work (mostly, though).

However, yes, the implication is that Sauron is not utterly and totally destroyed once the Ring is gone, but for all PRACTICAL purposes, he is dead.

yes, in the form he is left in after the destruction of the ring he is unable to do anything, but perhaps put fear into peoples hearts. that is the way i understand it.

I understood the ring was the only thing keeping Sauron from being completely eliminated from Middle Earth...To my understanding, once the ring was thrown into the fires of Mount Doom, he was forever gone along w the ring...unless someone else evil comes along and tries to recreate it! (but that's another book wink)

well he would be destroyed in the sense that he would never be able to take form again. you talk about someone coming along to recreate the ring, what book is that?

laughing out loud I wasn't actually saying there IS another book! laughing...I just meant to be sarcastic, and state that they would practically have to write another book on "The Return of Sauron"...or "The Return of the Dark Lord" or something....Hence the wink after my note??(please log in to view the image)

aaa, got ya. i thought you were saying there was some sort of fan fiction someone did, and the wink meant maybe it was your piece of fan fiction. it would be a cool story, perhaps say in the final battle with morgoth, sauron returns and reforges the ring. i always thought it would be cool to have a book or write a book based on that final battle, but it takes place in our present day world and all the forces of good and evil return with present day man in the middle, some going either way in the war.
