$312 Million 7 Day Total For 'Return Of The King'
[Wednesday, December 24th, 2003]New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King continues to triumph in theaters around the world, earning $312 million in its first week of release. Internationally, the final film in Peter Jackson's motion picture trilogy grossed $162 million, sailing past the first week of last year's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by 42%. Domestically, 'The Return of the King' earned $150 million in 3,702 theaters in its first seven days, a 22% leap from last year.
"This film's incredible strength in its first week of release is a testament to both the universality of Peter Jackson's storytelling and moviegoers' powerful connection with these characters," said New Line Cinemas Rolf Mittweg. "It is tremendously encouraging to see the final film in this extraordinary trilogy perform so far beyond expectations, and we are excited to expand the release into ten new countries this weekend."
Internationally, 'The Return of the King' opened on 7,403 screens in 28 territories, breaking records in numerous countries, including Austria, Germany and the UK. The film expands into the United Arab Emirates today, and into South America on Christmas Day. On December 26, 'The Return of the King' will be playing in 38 territories when it opens in Australia and Iceland.
