Orlando Bloom ("The Lord of the Rings") has come aboard "Pirates of the Caribbean," in which he will star opposite Johnny Depp, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Bloom plays a young British man who teams up with an honorable pirate (Depp) to save the woman he loves from dangerous pirates. While the female lead has yet to be cast, Geoffrey Rush is set to portray the evil Capt. Blackheart.

The most recent draft of "Pirates," which is based on the Disney theme park ride, was penned by "Shrek" scribes Terry Rosio and Ted Elliott, working from earlier drafts from Jay Wolpert and Stuart Beattie.

"Pirates" is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
