DreamWorks has pushed back the release date of
Shrek 3 from a November 2006 release to May 2007.
The date shift comes after a similar move by Walt Disney/Pixar Animation to push the date of
Cars from a November 2005 release to May 2006.
Both studios have moved from a fall release to an early summer release with the hopes of profiting from a larger summer audience, and a DVD release in time for the holiday season.
"The sheer magnitude of the 'Shrek' franchise has led us to conclude that a May release date, with a DVD release around the holiday season, will enable us to best maximize performance and increase profitability, thereby generating enhanced asset value and better returns for our shareholders," DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement.
