Brandon Routh Confident With 'Superman Returns'

Brandon Routh as SupermanBrandon Routh, who plays Superman in the upcoming Superman Returns, says that he's happy with the way the movie was shot. "It's weird, because we basically shot the film in chronological order, for Superman, anyway," Routh told Sci-Fi Wire. "So I think I actually feel ... more confident ... in the end of the film, because I was more confident by the end of the film. And I think ... the character's actually making that journey through the film. Even though he's only been gone for five years, he's still kind of getting back into the swing of things. So I actually feel that emotionally when I'm watching [it]. And ... it's still weird for me to watch, because I'm Superman, but that's weird because ... it's just weird."

In the movie, Superman returns after several years of absence. While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life.

The movie "is written to be the vague sequel to the first two films, so inherently in the script, there are many homages, and the character is basically written from that character, so there are similarities [with Reeven's portrayal] because of that," Routh said. "And the only thing that was done really to mimic Chris' performance was pushing the glasses up with the forefinger."

Roth says he "was influenced by Chris. Chris was my Superman. So when I read the script, I envisioned him. He was in my head all the time. But my Clark, ... everything that comes from him, for the most part, is all about the excitement. About being around when he first sees Lois again, when he meets [Lois' son] Jason and [her fiance] Richard [James Marsden]. It's all about him being so excited. That's sort of where the goofiness or clumsiness comes in. There's a certain amount that's always going to seem like Chris and all the other people that've come before, because that's kind of where we see it as a collective audience. We see the character. So we don't want to vary too much from that."
