Frank Oz Dismisses 'The Stepford Wives' Cameos
[Tuesday, June 8th, 2004]The Stepford Wives director Frank Oz says he avoided creating cameo roles for stars of the 1975 version of the film. "No," he told Sci-Fi Wire. "I never thought about it."
"I'll tell you what cameos do, " Oz added. "As opposed to strictly comedic high-comedy movies—[where they] can work, and I've done those also, and I've had a lot of cameos in those—with a movie like this you're invested in Matthew [Broderick] and Nic [Nicole Kidman], [and] there's an emotional core. Any cameo is just going to take you out of the movie. You'll be saying, 'Hey, that's such and such,' when I'm going for the honesty of this relationship. And so that's the reason I didn't do any."
With regards to suggestions that the studio may have put pressure on him to add cameo roles, he said. "Nobody, nobody made any suggestions to me." The Stepford Wives opens June 11.
