Nick Persons (Ice Cube, in only talented performance in the film) is a sweet bachelor who detests kids with a passion. A small business owner, Nick's new pride and joy is a big and shiny new SUV. As you can guess, the recurring joke in ARE WE THERE YET? is the continuing destruction of the SUV by the kids, Lindsey and Kevin Kingston (Aleisha Allen and Philip Bolden), that Nick suddenly finds himself transporting on a long car ride to help out his new girlfriend, Suzanne Kingston (Nia Long).
Although the film contains pratfalls aplenty and dumb humor around every corner, it's a silly comedy that provides plenty of laughs for those in the audience who are in the single digits or who can make like they are. Nick's comic sidekick is a talking bobble head doll of Satchel Paige (voiced by John Witherspoon).
Before Nick reluctantly begins his journey with the two hellions, he is heard to remark that kids are "like cockroaches, except you can't squoosh 'em." He almost doesn't get involved with Suzanne at all after he realizes that "She's a breeder!" But some good-lookers come packed with children, so he accepts his fate and tries to make the best of having to deal with Suzanne's challenging brood.
The only surprise in this mildly cute comedy? The title phrase was almost never said.
ARE WE THERE YET? runs 1:32. It is rated PG for "language and rude humor" and would be acceptable for all ages.
My niece Liana, age 8, had one of the best times that I've ever see her have at the movies. She laughed long and often. She said that her favorite part was the way the kids treated (read tormented) the guy.
The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, January 21, 2005. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC theaters, the Century theaters and the Camera Cinemas.
