Synopsis: During the Nazi occupation of Poland, a Jewish woman escapes from a train bound for death camp and is taken in by a a peasant landowner. The two engage is a tumultuous love affair which serves ultimately as a metaphor for the conscience of a nation deeply conflicted by its simultaneous sympathy for the Jewish population and the ideological positioning of the Jews as loathed enemy of the Nazi regime.
