RATING (0 TO ****): * 1/2

In BREAKFAST ON PLUTO, Cillian Murphy, the star of RED EYE and 28 DAYS LATER, makes quite a convincing woman. Playing a transvestite named Patrick, who also calls himself Kitten, St. Kitten and the Phantom Lady, Murphy only gives away his true sex because of his gravely voice.

Although it is billed as a comedy, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is one without a single laugh or smile, so I can only review it as a drama and a very busy one at that. The movie is divided into a long series of cutesy titles, such as "Be Still, My Heart" and "Lollipop Ladies." Flitting through twenty-two chapters in the first hour alone, it feels like someone trying to speed-read through a bad novel the size of "War & Peace."

BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is by Neil Jordan, an overrated writer and director whose main claim to fame is THE CRYING GAME, a film known chiefly for the surprise of its big ending twist. Jordan never gives us any reason to care about Patrick, no matter how much insufferable voice-over is added. After growing up "near the Irish border," Patrick goes off to London to look for the mother he never knew. The story begins with the cliché of a baby being left on a doorstep. Liam Neeson plays the priest who discovers the little lad.

Making his living as a prostitute, Patrick is suspected of being a terrorist too. I never cared for him or any of the characters he ran into. My main reflection upon leaving the movie was, "What was that all about?" The movie is also way too long. A total waste? I think so.

BREAKFAST ON PLUTO runs 2:15. It is rated R for "sexuality, language, some violence and drug use" and would be acceptable for most teenagers.

The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, December 23, 2005. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the Camera Cinemas.
