Synopsis: Set in Singapore of the 1960's--right before the city fathers decided to purify the entire country--a story which follows the unlikely journey of Lien, a wide-eyed 16-year-old who just moved from the rural village to the bustling heart of the city. She gains work as the maid in the charming old Sing Sing Hotel, not realizing the "hotel" is based in the heart of Singapore's red light district or that its "female" residents were relatively recent arrivals to the feminine side of life. As Lien overcomes her initial shock and intimidation--not to mention the distraction of the hunky young men who visit the hotel each night--she comes to befriend the transvestites and transsexuals of the Sing Sing, whose colorful personalities shield them against the cruelty of being branded as outcasts in a conservative Singaporean society. In time, Lien matures to discover the secrets and pains of love, sexuality and womanhood from her new "sisters."
