Susan Granger's review of "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (Buena Vista/Disney)
Attention! Every tweener (i.e.: pre-adolescent girl) who's had to go to a new school with a zit on her face: this is a comedy made 'specially for you! Lindsay Lohan ("Freaky Friday," "The Parent Trap") plays Lola, a typically bohemian Greenwich Village student who's forced to move to New Jersey when her recently divorced mother (Glenne Headly) decides it's time to leave Manhattan. For Lola, suburbia is sheer culture shock! Despite her pretty face, honey-colored hair and teen-queen outfits, she's no longer belle-of the-ball. In fact, she'll be bottom-of-the-barrel if she doesn't snag the lead in the school musical, an updated production of "Pygmalion" called "Eliza Rocks," from her bitchy rival (Megan Fox) and gain entry to her rock-star idol's (Adam Garcia) super-cool party in SoHo. So, dragging her nerdy new best-friend (Alison Pill) along with her, Lola steps up to the challenge.
In the hands of British director Sara Sugarman ("Very Annie Mary"), Gail Parent's cheerfully genial screenplay, based on the book by Dyan Sheldon, is filled with caricatures and clichés. Like Lola's live-action dream sequences against cartoon backgrounds. On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" is a fluffy 4, a predictable pre-teen chick flick that's harmless, charmless and immediately forgettable.
