DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD, by JACK FROST's director Troy Miller, is a prequel to the Farrelly brothers' 1994 comedy, DUMB AND DUMBER starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. I've seen Carrey and Daniels, and the new actors playing their roles, Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson, are no Carrey and Daniels, not by a long shot. A better name for this prequel would be DUMB AND DUMBERERERERER. Olsen and Richardson, as two complete idiots named Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, are merely stupid and not the least bit funny.
The movie concerns a high school scam in which Principal Collins (Eugene Levy) forms a fake "special needs" class in order to abscond with a one-hundred-thousand dollar grant. Ms. Heller (Cheri Oteri), the "lunch lady" and the principal's girlfriend, is the nominal teacher of this non-class. Since Lloyd and Harry are the only two certifiable nincompoops in the school, the principal recruits them to sign up others for the class.

Along the way we have lots of jokes involving farting, the game of "it," sexual innuendo, falling down, messy eating and chocolate mistaken for feces. None of the material is funny or original. The movie isn't gratingly awful as much as it is just a total waste of everyone's time.

DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD runs 1:22. It is rated PG-13 for "crude and sex-related humor, and for language" and would be acceptable for kids around 11 and up, although its jokes are aimed more at kids in the single digits.
My son Jeffrey, age 14, gave it 1/2 of a star, saying he completely despised it. He said that the jokes were so dumb that they were never funny. He commented that he'd "rather watch mold grow" than have to see this movie again.

The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, June 13, 2003. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC and the Century theaters.
