Directed and written David Talbert
Running Time 95 mins.
Rated PG.
Director David Talbert not only bring on a bundle of laughs, but he reaches the core of the human spirit with his message of maternal love, and giving people a second change before we are so quick to judge them, and throw them away. David Tabert is a well-known playwright that's best known for his plays. His plays are always depicted with a genuine look at life's hardships, romance, and the church that is based on the black experience. In his first film, and directorial debut" "First Sunday"" is comprised of a good ensemble of cast members that features the appearance of, Kat Williams, and Tracy Morgan together they lead this cast with an abundance of comedy that's sure to keep you laughing. Lead actor, and producer Ice Cube delivers a more serious role that ultimately raises our eyebrows of
conscience.
"While "First Sunday"" is David Talbert's first film I commend him on what I see is an accomplishment, and a film of promise despite its disparities at the box office. Some may even regard this film as simply another run of the mill stereotypical version of an out dated blaxsexplotative urban film, but overall David Talbert leaves us with a good message of love, and strength.
In this movie two friends with a criminal history get caught up in a criminal scheme of selling wheelchairs with a Jamaican gang. When the hoist goes wrong the two are ordered to pay $17,000 in one week or Durell portrayed by Ice Cube will lose his son. The two come up with a plan to get the money when they attempt to rob a church. Later the two robbers encounter a spiritual transformation they didn't expect. What happens next?
As I mentioned earlier ""First Sunday"" isn't a total waste it's very entertaining to say the least, and David Talbert's first directorial debut is certainly noticed here for its strong message of maternal love, and spiritual strength. David Talbert's positive images of maternal love, between and African American father and his son is indeed strong along with his heartfelt message when portraying the power of the church, over coming the bad, and giving people a second chance before judging them, and throwing them away. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this story at times is portrayed unrealistically. I found the scene of law enforcement, and its role when dealing with these two robbers weak, and over passive, a scene you must see I won't spoil it by revealing too much.
"First Sunday" gets 3 stars for its decent action scenes well done comedic dialog, and fairly good acting from the cast.
