Synopsis: Set in 1930s China, the tale begins with Ying'er, a theater owner's daughter, who looks forward to the return of her cellist fiancé, Shaodong, who has been traveling in the U.S. Upon his return, Shaodong becomes charmed by the Peking Opera star of "Fleeing by Night," Lin Chung. When the three begin spending more time together, Ying'er finds herself attracted to both men, while Shaodong must face his own growing, but forbidden, attraction to Lin Chung.
