Ok what do i have to say about Oldboy. Well to all of you that have seen it i think you could probably agree with me that it is rather strange.

Story: Oh Dae-su is kidnapped and held in a private housing cell for fifteen years. Upon his release, he is given one task by his captor: to find out the reasons why. With a decade and a half of built up aggression and burning curiosity, Oh Dae-su searches for the answers that robbed him of his life.

Im not saying that its bad in any way though. I think it is one of the most enthralling and sometimes gut renching movie i have seen. When i was watching this movie i expected it to be a movie with over the top violence. However as i delved into the movie more i found it to be a dark psychological Drama. Min-sik Choi plays the part of Oh Dae-su superbly and the story even though sometimes slow in parts always kept me guessing on what was going to happen. And another thing i have to say is that it has a Whoppa of an ending!

So if you havent seen it then i command you to watch it now. Because you wont be dissapointed.

MildPossession
I saw Oldboy ages ago when released in Hong Kong, I absolutely love it, got it on final edition dvd. I really want the soundtrack but can't find it anyway other than american sites.

Cait Sith
Ill try and find the Soundtrack for you

G.P
Great movie, a bit violent but with fantastic cinematography and soundtrack.

it strikes the spectator through the complete dehumanisation of the character (how far the destruction of an individual can go...)

Gemini no Saga
I agree.

This movie is the second of Park's trilogie, on the theme of vengeance.
The first movie of this trilogie is "Sympathy for Mr vengeance"(different of Old boy cause less physical violence, but more mental violence, the Ryu's story is more tragic with this fatality...), and the third is "Sympathy for lady vengeance". In this trilogie, the theme of family is very importante too.

MildPossession
I am looking forwards to Lady Vengeance, looks wonderful, big fan of Park Chan Wook films. Joint Security Area is excellent.

I wanted to watch old boy, it was in cinemas not long ago, but it was rated R18+ and so I couldnt. Pity.

Cinemaddiction
Just a note, Tartan Extreme is releasing "Oldboy" on DVD here in the US tomorrow. I'm blind buying it, based on some great reviews.

BackFire
I will be too.

LV is suppose to be excellent, doing well.

I finally got around to watching "Oldboy" the other day and really enjoyed it. It's best described as "twisted poetic justice", how Dae-su Oh gets his comeuppance. Not as violent as I had actually hoped for, but it was still quite original, and very intriguing.

Mistalova
Really enjoyed watching it, very intriquing and the end is excellent when he knows with his daughter... wink
Movie to see...

BackFire
I got this movie for Christmas and just now finished watching it. I thought it was amazing, one of the absolute smartest "twists" I've ever seen. It was refreshing to see a movie that used it's twist for more then just a cheap "oh, you didn't see that coming, did you" and make a point with it. Outstanding movie.

Ya Krunk'd Floo
I just finished watching Oldboy...Wow, that's a movie! The scene in the corridor with all the hoods was incredible. The twist is a jaw-dropper that I never saw coming.

The whole movie was spectacular.

MildPossession
I thought the corridoor scene was sublime, amazing to watch.

Yeah, at one point I kinda guessed the twist, but as the movie went on it did a good job of making me think otherwise, and eventually making me forget about it all together.

The thing that made the twist so great was not the twist itself, but how it was done, and how plausable and meaningful it was to exploring the emotions and needs of the characters.

Again, amazing movie.

Ya Krunk'd Floo
Yeah, his reaction to the disclosure is amazing and terrible at the same time.

My understanding of the final denouement is that he gets the hypnotist to erase his memory of the disclosure, so he can carry on tupping his daughter guilt-free - do you concur?

BackFire
Yeah, that's what I got out of it. That's what was truley shocking about the realization, makes a great and accurate statement about humanity and our sometimes horrendous need for happiness, even if it means ignoring the truth.

Also, it had some kick ass music.

thegreatrudini
quality film i want the other 2

MildPossession
Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are a must see. Get them now! smile

BackFire
I'll be getting Mr. Vengeance next week, Lady Vengeance I have to wait a while for, unfortunately.

Pandemoniac
Definitely one of the best movies I ever saw. Very intriguing, original story brought with so much style. I loved the balance between heartbreaking drama and jawbreaking action, and thumbs up to the clever humor that popped up here and there.
9/10, you want this one in your collection

Myth
During the summer I get those unlimited rental things and watch as movies as I can. I've watched 75-80 movies this summer and this is EASILY my favorite of the summer. Great (disturbing) story and awesome violence. That fight in the hall puts Kill Bill to shame (mostly because its just as badass, but more realistic). I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this movie.

(btw, The Proposition is my #2 for the summer)

xkalybr
That hallway fight scene was awesome.

Heard it took three weeks of choreography to get it down.

Dusty
I just got done with it. It was very violent (mostly off screen).

It was good, but I don't think I'd watch it more than twice.

The hallway fight scene was ace.

BackFire
Shit, I watched it twice the first week I owned it. Such an awesome movie.

Kryzula
I was impressed with it. Actually, I've been impressed with most of the South Korean films that I have seen. So far there has only been one that I didn't really care for, and it wasn't that bad.

There is a remake in the works. Check imdb for info.

WHAT!?! That is just wrong! How dare them!

Solo
If the cast and the director was chosen correctly, it could end up being pretty great.

Advent
Possibly be good as a remake, though there's more of a chance that it won't be. It was still a pretty good movie. Though, wouldn't it had just been easier if he carried a gun at the end (or throughout the whole story), and shot the guy in his penthouse? Much less painful than what he ended up doing. Guns > Scissors > Fist.

SelphieT
this movie kicks ass

Kryzula
I hope they get someone good to play Oh Dae-su in the remake... Any ideas?

~ Kryzula

Darth Aain
Hah u wish....

Arent they getting Nicolas Cage and Natalie Portman? Also i heard they cutting the sex scene with the daughter which is grotesque but wuld ruin the whole thing.

Kryzula
Well I heard that Nicolas Cage expressed interest in the film. I haven't heard anything about Portman...

Min-sik Choi was perfect as Oh Dae-su...

~ Kryzula

Solo
Nic Cage is such a terrible option, as for Portman, she could be alright.

Kryzula
I agree... Cage is not fitting at all. I have nothing against him, I just can't picture him playing the part.

~ Kryzula

SelphieT
This movie.....was flat out amazing. The fight scenes were excellent. I loved it. thumb up

Phat J
yeah this is a great film, it sort of left a bad taste in my mouth though. im used to having my movies end with the guy getting the girl and killing the bad guy, it was refreshing in a way.

Arashi13
The film kept my attention and was very entertaining in parts. I hated the bad guy and how mean spirited he was. I think his revenge was overdone. The main star reminds me of Robert DeNiro for some reason. He is a very good actor. I also saw him in a very fine film with Cecilia Cheung but it was even more depressing and dark then this film.

soin2cal
shouldnt this go in the movie discussion? It isnt such a foreign film, as its in english.

Solo
Oldboy is a korean film.

Dubbed movies are awful. Use your brain, get the original, and read the subtitles.

BackFire
Actually, I saw this movie dubbed, and the dubbing was surprisingly good. I liked it better dubbed than subtitled.

Great movie & cold hearted revenge.

Nosada
Oldboy rocks.

Dr. Strangelove
Amazing film. One scene that stuck with me after learning twist was when Dae-su and Mi-do are unconscious from the gas in the hotel room in which Lee Woo-jin wearing the gasmask starts touching Mi-do. Knowing how much Lee controlled both their lives just made that scene stand out. It was like a rattlesnake playing with its prey with every intention to frighten and humiliate its victim.

Sado22
anyone seen this movie?
IMO it is one of the greatest movie i've ever seen. the story is great, the acting is great and the picturization and monolgues are also very good.

Synopsis: a man is kidnapped and locked in a room for 15 years. one day he is let free and told that he has 5 days to find out why he was kidnapped or someone he loves will be killed.

Tagline: 15 years of imprisonment. 5 days of vengeance.

Badass movie. and must see from Korean cinema.

I'm having a tough time finding this film in any electronics store.

I've tried like 6 different stores and no luck.

Any suggestions?

I'd like to avoid getting it online, but I will if I have to.

Dr. Strangelove
I found it at Borders once. I would recommend Netflix if you just want to rent it.

Do you have Best Buy where you live? That's usually a reliable source for me.

MildPossession
What about a Kim's Video & Music shop, I went into two in New York years ago and they specialise in foreign film sections. Don't know if they are outside of New York though.

Yeah, I go to Best Buy all the time and that is the first store I checked. All they had was this super special edition that cost like 75 dollars.

Never heard of that place; it might be confined to New York.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out Borders and if all else fails I will order it online.

Some bad news:

Will Smith and Steven Spielberg are in talks to remake of the violent Korean drama Oldboy, says Variety.

The 2003 original follows a man who is incarcerated for 15 years without explanation. Upon his release, he goes on a revenge-fueled mission to seek out his captor. Oldboy is the second film in director Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy, which includes Sympathy For Mr Vengeance and Sympathy For Lady Vengeance.

Spielberg, who has reportedly been looking for a project to make with Smith, is in the process of securing the remake rights for DreamWorks and hiring a writer for the project.

Bada's Palin
You know that Will Smith won't be chipping anyone's teeth out -.-

MildPossession
I don't see them keeping the twist in either.

Phat J
dont hold your breath on that one. why remake a movie and completely change it? seems silly to me.

MildPossession
It's possible, they completely changed it for the Bollywood remake.

Phat J
no they will change it, that was confusing on second glance there what i said. there's no way that they'll keep the twist in. i was just reflecting on how stupid it was to call it a remake and change it so drastically from the original and not keep the most important part.

BackFire
Lame.

J32
just read in a blog that Spielberg and Smith are planning to make a remake of "Old Boy"...

I haven't seen it yet in the original. But I will these days if I have time.

Good movie in multiple ways. Pretty f*cked up. The ending caught me off guard, but at least it made sense. I have not seen this in a couple years, I think I'm due to watch it again.

Oh yeah, the Bollywood remake was worse smelling than a festering pile of dog shit.

I hope to Yog-Sothoth that this never gets re-made by American arseholes.
