No, not at all. I quit being a Christian when I was in my twenties. I found Buddhism in my forties. I spent twenty years in the wilderness before God brought me to Buddhism.

That makes sense.

Did you still feel that becoming a buddhist was a conversion from your former religion?

In a way, it was. But I like to use the lost in the wilderness analogy because when I found Buddhism, it was like finding the promised land.

I think its fine, depending on the reasons behind it. By that i mean, i've known people who did it to piss their parents off. Their business, but, i dont think much of that.

Would you convert?
Would and have.

Would you convert for your partner if he/she insisted?
No.

I would "convert" for my wife in as much as I would superficially convert to appease her family, belief is belief, it doesn't change because it's asked to... Like sexual preference, gay men marry women all the time to be accepted by family/society

riv6672
Not the most apt analogy, but not going to harp on that; i see what you mean.

Like sexual preference, gay men marry women all the time to be accepted by family/society once i thought i would do this for a woman. we thought we might get married and she would get disowned if i didn't. thinking back on it now i am pretty sure that wouldn't have worked anyway. i guess maybe i'm just not dedicated enough to keep up a ruse for that long but to me it seems that would almost certainly fall through eventually.

Scoobless
It's easy for me to answer like that purely because I don't follow any religion... I imagine that if I did my answer may be very different

GRRRR
️Thank you all!
For self conversion it's understandable. The person makes their own choice.
But with forced conversion...Here is the problem. This peer pressure. Families going Romeo-Juliet style, no you won't be together because you are of different religions. And then you either "appease" or stand your ground and go away un/defeated. What about free will? What about tolerance? Why does someone's disrespectful judgement has to impact lives? We are not apes, we are human beings, we have to be civilized.

lying to self and everyone around you?

Yes, actually. I'm pretty ok about that in this context, purely because I don't have belief in any organised religion.

So as I have no "church" to betray I am free to make choices that can make other's lives easier.

Hard to say for sure but imo if your religion tells you to hate and kill others, that might not be a great one to have.

If judged by that aspect, all major religions would be not that great then.

What is the most used name for your god? What do you address it as daily?

What do you think this many-named God fellow has done for you that you should thank him or her?

Impediment
Hmm.

Well, being that I'm an atheist I have no definitive answer on the ethics of converting to another religion. However, I'll go on record and state that I would never ask my partner/significant other to convert against their will due to insistence.

Bardock,
Your comments are not related to the subject at hand.
Keep sarcasm for someone else. Thank you!

I just think that if your faith is firmly cemented, then why convert? A strong, healthy relationship, in my opinion, doesn't need matching beliefs/religions.

My wife is a Christian and she married an atheist. Go figure, huh? Ha ha.

Agreed. However, not all individuals have strong will to confront public opinion (eg family not accepting a partner of another faith etc)

Sounds to me like disapproving family members need to go to the store and buy some business of their own and stay the f*ck out of yours.

That's just my opinion.

Also, I couldn't care less what others would say. All you need is your own opinion and believe in it.

Time Immemorial
GRRR,

If you don't believe in any religion but believe in God, you can't "convert" to your significant others religion who believes in the same God.

You are right, there is only One God and he does go by many names, some call him YHWH.

Is there a different definition to this? One is being forced to accept the religion of significant other.

Lol, the crusades?

Sometimes you do things for those you love right?

In my honest opinion, just because you very much love someone doesn't mean that they should have to convert to appease their partner or their family.

But religion ? At my own will only. Especially when it's being forced on me.

Under the rights that this, Nomi Sunrider Respect Thread, is my thread, I will be converting its function and purpose to the worship and aggression of the Badabingites. The Badabingites is a cult that praises the Velociraptor mongoliensis as its supreme leader on the Internet. As leader of this cult, I will establish the rules, members, and guidelines members must follow if they wish to post in this topic. Any who wishes to post must follow what I say or they will suffer persecution.

The Ten Mandates of the Crown
1. Thou shalt not have no other moderators before Badabing.
2. Thou shalt not consider any moderator better then Badabing.
3. Thou shalt take the judgment of Badabing as law and justice.
4. Remember the day of the Revanith, and keep it wankaful.
5. Honor your fellow members of the forum who have befriended you.
6. Thou shalt not be aggressive to any KMC member besides Beniboybling.
7. Thou shalt not befriend or give kindness to Beniboybling and his minions.
8. Thou shalt not take credit for work of other members.
9. Thou shalt not forge fake quotes, scans, or dialogue of any canon work.
10. Thou shalt not lust the perfection and beauty of Revan the Almighty.

Consequences of Breaking the Mandates
First Offense: You will lose all protection from insults and disease from SWTOR members.
Second Offense: You will be discarded as no longer one of our own, and exiled to the wastelands of SWTOR forums.
Third Offense: You will be considered a minion and disciple of Beniboybling, resulting in the capture and passing of your I.P Address.
Fourth & Fifth Offense: http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrh4uxIkn11r34h1ko1_500.gif
