The Living Tribunal is a powerful entity who is usually represented by a yellow-bodied being with three faces, each one differently obscured by a purple veil. The three faces represent vengeance, necessity, and equity. The back of the head is completely veiled, the spot once belonging to the fourth face, the face that would in time become the enigmatic Stranger. It serves as a judge in the cosmic heirarchy, and its decisions are final. No one is capable of defying its decree, except the One Above All (I), who grants him it its powers. Its main purpose is to keep order within the Marvel Multiverse, and the rare occasion when there is bleed over to the other Multiverses in the Marvel Megaverse.

In Marvel Universe: The End, which was originally intended to be non-canon like the rest of the series of minis and one-shots, Thanos acquires power of immense proportions through the Heart of the Universe, which allowed Thanos to defeat the cosmic host, in addition to the summoned defenders of the 616 universe. The battle destroyed the universe, leaving Thanos alone in the void. Thanos even managed to defeat an M-body of the Living Tribunal, which leads many to believe that Thanos became all-powerful, while the truth is he had just rendered it out of commission for some time to heal its wounds after the battle. However such is not the case, as Thanos was trapped in the universe, unable to leave or sense any other universes, such as the location of Adam Warlock who was in the realm of Atlez at the time. The M-Body of the Living Tribunal only contains a portion of the power that is given to the Living Tribunal. Now you may ask why didn't the Living Tribunal return for a rematch? However you must understand the Living Tribunal's job is to maintain the balance. After the battle, there was no longer a universe to keep balanced, thus no further need for the Living Tribunal to return, but to just cross it off the list of universes it looks after in the Marvel Multiverse.

The Stranger is an enigmatic being who seeks to study the mutations of the universe. He seeks to observe what makes everything unique from one another. His true origin is unknown to almost all beings, as he continually seeks to hand out false information to all those who ask. However, the few that do know, realize the Stranger is truly a stranger, a being unique to almost all. The Stranger was once the fourth face of the Living Tribunal, but he rejected his role, hoping to find uniqueness in being free from the role he was given.

The Living Tribunal is an omnipotent entity that is empowered by an unknown force, the "One Above All" (God), to pass judgment on beings capable of changing the universe and to maintain the "cosmic balance of power."

The Living Tribunal has three faces. One is uncovered, one is partially covered, and one is completely covered. These three faces have multiple meanings:

Equity, Necessity, and Vengeance
Death, Eternity, Galactus
In-Betweener, Lord Chaos, Master Order
Judgment, Knowledge, Review
The Living Tribunal is usually the most powerful being in the entirety of the Marvel Universe. He is sometimes compared to the Spectre of DC Comics.

The Living Tribunal is a vastly powerful humanoid entity who has existed as long as the universe itself, and whose function is to safeguard the multiverse (the continuum of alternate universes) from an imbalance of mystical forces. Possessing untold power, the Tribunal will act to prevent one of the universes from amassing more concentrated mystical power than any of the others, or upsetting the cosmic balance and threatening the other universes. The Tribunal will also act to prevent a grave imbalance between the mystical forces allied with good and those allied with evil within one universe. Usually the Tribunal leaves matters involving a mystical imbalance affecting only Earth's universe to be monitored by the universe's "abstract" entities Lord Chaos and Master Order, and to be dealt with by their creation, the In-Betweener.

The Tribunal is willing to obliterate an entire inhabited planet to safeguard an entire universe or the multiverse itself, and is fully capable of doing so by an exercise of his own power. One of the most powerful beings in the multiverse, the Tribunal can turn a star into a supernova with a single force bolt.

The Living Tribunal manifests itself as a being with three faces, which represent the three sides of the Tribunal's personality. Its front face, through which it usually speaks, stands for equity. The completely hooded face on the right side of its head represents necessity, and the half-hooded face on the left side stands for just revenge. All three sides of the Tribunal's mind must be in agreement when judging a case requiring possible action before the Tribunal can intervene.

The Living Tribunal's first known encounter with a being of Earth was with Earth's Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange. He later met the Galadorian spaceknight Rom and the vastly powerful extradimensional Beyonder.
