If y'all just believed in the power of thoughts and prayers a bit more it'd take no time at all.

Recover how? To recover economically it may take a few years depending if companies decide to spend their money hiring people.

Things like going to the movies or sporting events may take longer as many people may be wary of large gathering for some time, even after they’re deemed safe.

I think it also all depends on how long it takes for a vaccine to be developed.

We don't have a vaccine for the common cold and it kills millions each year. We'll be okay.

Just have to undo the hysteria and fear the WHO and the CDC spread to return people back to normal.

Undoing fear is what will take time. People are going to have it in their heads that large gatherings are unsafe for a long time I think. Even after a vaccine is developed I think people may still be scared.

people are wasting away DDM and we do have flu vaccines.

You see, the thing about viruses is that they mutate.

Common cold =/= flu. Different virus groups, cold has 100s, flu has only several. Common cold is not a disease, it's a discounted bundle of symptoms. Many symptoms overlap with flu, but severity is much reduced. No cure and no vaccine for cold.

Where hes getting "the common cold and it kills millions each year" though, I have no flappin clue.

The WHO says we have 2 million children die each year from colds.

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/18/11/12-0607_article

And I've posted other research that found the colds have a higher mortality rate than Flus - a secret killer because we think of it is "mild."

Yet, we do not shut down the world every flu and cold season despite the massive mountain of deaths.

The WHO does not say that. Where are you getting "the cold" kills millions? The cold is a group of mild symptoms indicative of a mild upper respiratory tract infection. That Vietnamese paper says "The World Health Organization estimates that ≈2 million children die each year from acute respiratory tract infection (ARI), and most live in developing countries" and it doesn't use the word "cold" once.

The WHO article on reducing childhood mortality that it links to also doesn't once use the word "cold" or even the word "rhinovirus" but instead talks about childhood susceptibility to "Pneumonia, or other acute respiratory infections" being the cause of death, "malnutrition" being the risk factor, and "antibiotics" being the treatment (as most childhood pneumonia is caused by bacterial infection).

The WHO article doesn't even use the figure "2 million", and in fact, never even pairs up the word "million" in or around a sentence speaking of ARIs. It doesn't even speak of "developing" countries, just refers to sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia in general as the source of early childhood deaths--not just from ARIs but of all deaths, as that's what the article is about.

So where the Vietnamese paper got that wording for their abstract, I have no f*cking clue.

That paper, because I feel you didn't actually read it, is about an outbreak of ARI in a Vietnamese orphanage and the study done determined that human rhinovirus (HRV) was "the main pathogen detected in an outbreak of severe ARI in children living in an orphanage in Vietnam". Those children were infants, BTW, <6 months old.

If you've been conflating "rhinovirus" with "common cold", stop. HRV is the usual suspect of the common cold, but that's not its only handiwork. The common cold can--CAN-- lead to an ARI in the upper respiratory tract, especially in the very young and old and those with compromised immune systems especially if it involves the lungs. And of course it's going to be worse in developing countries. The paper and article talk about that, they do not talk of the common cold.

Too late to edit, but if you could post the links you mentioned to the other sources I'd supes appreciate it. My Google Fu is usually strong, but I'm turning up nothing that links the common cold (and only the common cold, not virus groups) to high death rates (or death rates at all, really). I wanna know what's true, so if there's some hella credible sources that have been dodging me, I'm all ears.

You've mistaken that these facts were debatable - they are not. They are not up for debate so there's no point in getting angry about the fact the colds cause over 2 million deaths in children each year. I stopped reading after you denied the face value facts.

If all it takes for you to post something more than smart assed sarcasm is to point out the fact the colds cause over 2 million deaths each year (guess what ARI's are almost 100% caused by?), then I've done a great job.

But, hey, knock yourself out arguing with doctors and epidemiologists:

https://www.healthline.com/health/a...se#risk-factors

https://www.healthline.com/health/a...atory-infection

"Dudes! You're totally not alllowed to correlate colds with URIs/ARIs because I don't like the fact that colds killed 2 million children each year!"

So here's some more fun for you:

quote:
...4.25 million deaths each year, according to the first-ever Acute Respiratory Infections Atlas (ARIAtlas.org), published today by World Lung Foundation. ARIs are the third largest cause of mortality in the world and the top killer in low- and middle-income countries. Compared to the illness and mortality they cause, ARIs receive a fraction of government, donor agency, and philanthropic support.

Why'd you refute his points now all he has left is that sarcasm. Maybe something about how the right put kids in cages or something so who cares about kids dying from the flu.

I genuinely thought better of you.

Colds are not synonymous with ARIs. If a cold leads to an ARI, then it's a cause. Your own damn links say as much; They define an ARI as "Acute respiratory infections (ARIs), a disease group that includes pneumonia, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)" one of which is influenza, which is not a goddamned cold.

I'm right onboard with your decrying overreaction over COVID compared to worse things like flu, but telling people shit like "the common cold kills millions" and not dumping on it the dozen or so asterisks with their footnotes needed to prevent that from being a loaded, spurious statement is f*cking repugnant, especially from someone who claims to care so dearly about the efficacy of healthcare.
