But then, aren't you basically asking why are any of the physical constants the way they are? I mean, I would guess that E=mc2 because that's what fits in with the other constants to make our particular universe.

When you keep asking "why," I think, Well, 'why' questions often imply intention, which implies consciousness, and now we're veering toward something like Intelligent Design. I didn't think you were coming from that end. Yet, from a pure physics point of view, "why" is not a question science deals with: what, how, when, where, yes, but not questions involving any sort of metacosmic purpose.
I tried to improvise; the only other recourse is: Are you asking for the mathematical specifics, the number context in which c^2 makes logical sense? That stuff is way beyond my ken.

Anyways, Symm's just asking for the science behind why it makes sense to square C. As in, why is it that multiplying M x C doesn't equal E... not a philosophical question, or anything relating towards intelligent design.

Yeah but it gets to a point where "Why" becomes entirely unverifiable, which leads you into the realm of meta physics.
The question can be answered as follows (but i don't think you'll like the answer)
E=mc2 because .... it just does, in the same way that Force = m X A and the angles of a hypotenuse triangle blah, blah blah. Thats just how we experience reality.
